Feeling a little bad for marking this down, as any record shop is good in my book for just existing these days. However this place needs a bit of TLC, and I’m not talking about Left Eye and Co. Its really disorganised, now I don’t mind a bit of crate digging, but wondering from stack to stack you might find yourself stumbling on some random porn?! Now this may be a extra star in some cases but not when your looking for something specific… like a record. They also have lists in a folder at the desk with records they keep somewhere in the back. I did once get a rareTom Waits’ «Bone Machine» on vinyl in there and thats not a euphemism about the porn…

Now although I can agree on some of the points made in other reviews, I found this store to my liking. Although not the best set out it certainly had lots of stock. One word of warning though it doesn’t open until 1pm and is also shut on a Thursday. I am a 7″ singles buyer so i found lots of boxes to look through and at only 20p a single that to me is a bargain. Yes you do get your hands dirty looking amongst them for some gems infact you might think my hands had been near some coal after my search! But when you think I came out of the shop with 84 singles and cost me less than £17 I will be going back again one day for another rake around!

It’s hard to disagree with fellow Unilocalers here; Lost Chord should be everything that’s right about the West End. Long serving, independently-owned, unique, quirky, it could be a treasured resource for Glasgow but somehow, somewhere along the line this shop appears to have morphed from being a labour of love to a laborious slog for its owners. The outrageously colourful montage sprawled across the doorway marks an encouraging start and continues to piqué the curiosity of new passing trade, but inside the shop is overwhelmingly unkempt. I’m not averse to doing a bit of digging to unearth some hidden gems, but with little order to the stock it can be a fairly thankless and monotonous task. What struck me most was how tired the place felt. The most striking album covers on the shelves were rarely classics but rather items which no self-respecting person would want in their home, while posters weren’t so much vintage as just old. And I’m sorry, but charging anything more than a few bob for VHS in this day in age is just not on. A sign on the door shows the shop now offers a VHS to DVD service for just a fiver, which hopefully, fingers crossed, signals a tangible hint of progression. It’s hard to believe in its current state, but the West End would be a much poorer place without businesses like this. Get it sorted!

The best thing i can say about Lost Chord is the shop front which sports a trippy, psychedelic montage of the weird and the wonderful(there’s a giraffe in it for god’s sake). Beyond this its kind of hard to disagree with the previous reviews of this place. Cluttered to the point where you feel like tidying it before you can even think about looking for anything, expensive to the extent that you can and will easily find things cheaper on eBay or indeed any of the other on line emporiums and just plain disappointing. For those of us out there who find the concept of this shop to be very appealing, used books, magazines, Cd’s, DVDs, videos and what not, to be faced with this damp squib is very disappointing. Sorry guys, as Lewis agonised over sticking the knife into the little guys, as do i. Report card would read«has so much potential but lacking in any real effort»…

Lost Chord prides itself as Glasgow’s longest serving second hand record store. First impressions aren’t great, the shop is really cluttered and poorly organised but they do have an awful lot of stuff. Mostly records and videos but there are DVDs and CDs. They have some rather dated posters that make good browsing, vintage posters I suppose. They had a few Brad Pitt ones and a Boyzone one amongst others. I didn’t notice any porn when I was in the other day(Nov 09). Their video collection is very good, I was really surprised by the variety and their international film section is great but as Lewis pointed out it is expensive and I would be reluctant to spend more than £5 on a second hand video given they lose quality and videos are so often found for £1 in charity shops. The man in the shop was quite happy for me to just browse, I didn’t buy anything. The website is much clearer, I’m not even sure that the shop’s items are in any specific order at the moment.
