I’m excited about going back to Glasgow University, and I’m excited about embarking on my new course(and hopefully career). But most of all, dear friends, I am totally stoked at the prospect of being able to waltz into the Hetherington Research Club for a spot of lunch between studies! The Research Club, designed for postgraduates, is a peaceful place where you can study and get a spot of lunch if you don’t fancy taking yourself to the QMU. As an undergrad, I was bashfully bowled over at being invited in here by postgradding friends, and was as eager as Thumper the rabbit in Bambi to get my mitts on the grub. In time, I also attended a few events in here, from book readings to craft fairs. It lends itself well to that sort of thing and is a good setting for stalls and showcases as much as it is for the club nights mentioned by other reviewers. I don’t know if I’m quite at mature student status yet, but I am nevertheless enthusiastic to make use of the rooms for studying. It’s a peaceful, refined environment on usual weekdays and a space I will be utilising, as most postgrads should during their time at uni! And if studying gets too much, they have a well stocked bar…

The Hetherington Research Club is a reminder that life at university ain’t so bad after all, Amongst the calamity of soulless anonymous clubs us young unassuming students are heralded into around the west end of Glasgow The Hetherington Research Club is quite a saving grace. Good food in an elegant Victorian building is a reminder that one day I will be joining the«real world» and will no longer be just another student digging deep in to pockets of shrapnel to pay for my warm flat £1.25 pint of watered down Tennents, served in lager in a plastic cup. I have yet to attend a sub city party but I do know that Plastican, a pioneer in electronic music graced this wonderful place last year, further evidence of the Hetherington’s ability to pull in big names.

The Research Club is a social club which exists to provide mature students at the University of Glasgow a place to go when they want to put their feet up. In recent years the good people from Sub City Radio(the University radio station) decided that this would be a great place to have a club night. How right they were! I have been to two of the club nights and they are fantastic. The music is laid on by the DJs from the radio station and the people are friendly. Given that it is a research club for mature students the inside is really unusual for a club but it really works. The reputation of the club is really taking off and they have even been graced by a DJ set from Glasgow legends Optimo. If you want to try a club night with quality music and friendly people then stop by. The club nights are quite irregular so check the Myspace page or for further information.
