I eventually wrote my near ultimate review of The Long Way Home. I just couldn’t hold back any longer. I think I’m addicted!!! So to be invited along to the Elite Event with all them other addicts eh Unilocalees, was an absolute unexpected pleasure. I didn’t know what to expect. I was excited yet a little apprehensive. I was keen to go to get a wee nosey of The Long Way Home as I’m heading there for my work’s Christmas night out soon. I was a little taken back after meeting Chris D after seeing a whole table full of glasses. I thought«help ma boab» we got a lot of catching up to do and what kind of meet up have I walked into. I was a little late due to my mishap with the mighty black ice of Byres Road. Grr! I missed the introduction hence my confusion. After the explaination of a gin tasting session I tried to catch up as best I could. I sadly missed the history and the explainations of the majority of the gins. Jamie who was our excellent host, to be honest I think I got to the best part of the night, starting making up various cocktails. Now I’m not a gin drinker but I did find a most delicious cocktail called Bramble. I think I’ll be having more of them at the Christmas night out. We also had a delightful buffet with the highlight being haggis balls. Mmmm! They were super yum! It was an all round excellent night and I’ve met some really nice people who I hope to keep in touch with. Thanks Chris for doing a sterling job! By the way if you find a fruit beer tasting session, that would be awesome to the max.

Man, I love trivia. Facts, stories, dates, etymologies. I’m mad for that stuff. I don’t know my way around an engine, DIY is a recipe for disaster, but get me on a quiz team and I’m dynamite. So as you can imagine, this evening was a delight for me. It didn’t matter that I wasn’t really a fan of gin, turns out I just didn’t know enough about it. Sipping a broad selection of different gins whilst being told the story and history of each, and how it reflected the history of the world was a rare treat. Top marks for the breadth of research involved and the presentation. This was my first experience of a tasting session, but absolutely won’t be my last. The cocktails and the delicious food were an excellent, added bonus. As for the place itself? Loved it. A cosy wee cave of a pub, with enough neat eclectic features to mark it out against the mass of competition along Byre’s Road. It seems a bit of a shame that more people don’t make that extra effort to come a bit further down Byre’s Road to try it out, but honestly that only adds to my enjoyment. Selfish as it is, I like that it doesn’t get too mobbed, even on the Friday before Christmas. And only minutes from my new flat too! I can see myself becoming a bit of a regular. Excellent company of course, but going by past Unilocal meet ups, this is to be expected. Looking forward to more.
