In my former American life I was very active… ballet and pointe from a young age until my early 20s, then yoga, pilates, spinning, Muay Thai and kettlebells up to 5 – 6 times a week. Since moving to the UK, it seems to come in waves. Yoga has been the only calming force and constant. Over a month ago, Abi opened up her boutique studio near Strathbungo and Queens Park and I have been a fan ever since. Compared to impersonal big box gyms, Barbreck is intimate and unintimidating, while offering you the ability to challenge yourself. Kettlebells? Athletic strength and conditioning(Olympic lifting)? Bootcamp? Boxing? Metafit? Pick your poison, and step up to the challenge. Classes are small, and guaranteed individual attention; something that is lacking when you sign up for a class where they squeeze in 30 students! It’s a challenging environment, but also friendly and encouraging. In addition to classes, I work with Abi during personal training sessions where she creates workouts geared towards my goals. Though I think I made the mistake of telling her I wanted to strengthen my core for yoga inversions and arm balances, and I’m now in a world of pain. To compliment the fitness side, Abi also offers sports and massage therapy which is housed next to the studio. From training, injury assessment, treatment, rehabilitation and therapy, is there anything Abi cannot do? Oh she’s also part owner of the Scottish Kettlebell Club too ;-)
