I went to school in Shawlands for the best part of my teenage years; then I worked in Shawlands for some more years and then I lived in Shawlands. Needless to say, I have been somewhat of a regular in here over this time. The staff and very polite, friendly and even chatty on occasion(very nice and not entirely common in most newsagents). The service is also very good, with staff having a good range of their products and alerting you to offers on bulk buys. You may think this is a little unnecessarily in these types of shops; but when I ran in desperately trying to find large envelopes on the last five minutes of my lunch break, this was very much appreciated. This brings us onto the products and prices section of the review. As Liz has said there is a surprisingly good range of stationary, cards and the like as well as magazines, newspapers, ciggies and sweets. Meanwhile, the prices are all pretty standard and do not take advantage as other newsagents often do. All round an excellent and lovely wee newsagent.

Alim’s is not anything special, but has the usual range of magazines, from top to bottom shelf content, bits and pieces of things that you might have wanted but didn’t realise, a limited range of food for when you’ve forgotten top plan dinner and plenty of sweets. Of course, the real reason to use Alim’s is to buy cigarettes and I notice that they do not overprice them: the price range along the road veers from bargain to ripoff, and Alim’s is fair, usually staying below the £6 mark. It isn’t extensive in its opening hours, and that might account for the good price: it is the places with late opening that seem to add a little tax on their products.

Alim’s is a surprisingly large newsagent and one-stop-shop on Pollokshaws Road. They have a pretty good range of cards and stationery, including calculators, inside. Their cards are actually of a great standard, for it not being exclusively a card shop. I just got a wee pack of wine gums in here, costing 40p, which I think is pretty cheap these days, no? The guy behind the counter was a bit strange. He was polite and everything, he just seemed a bit distracted or dazed.
