Excellent food and service. We had the scallops, oysters and the monkfish and seafood curry with the chorizo rice. Everything was fantastic! The curry was very delicate and not spicy and the monkfish and prawns cooked perfectly! Best scallops I have had dice a trip a few years ago to Portsmouth Maine. Vedett and San Miguel on tap and other beers by bottle. Nice wine selection. Sat at a table with a view of a lighthouse. Small and cozy place. We saw the fish monger deliver the seafood, beer distributor the kegs and another delivery of maybe homemade ice cream or something else. Needless to say everything is fresh and prepared by the chef!!!

The whole experience of eating here had a farcical edge that could have been saved by good food, or good value, or good service. But none of those apply to this restaurant. Telephone booking was taken by a person who seemed bonkers. A very strange first impression. Said person was on duty when we dined and proved, indeed, to be bonkers. And not in an endearing way, rather quite a scary way. The other member of staff was a cocky young man who had no idea how to look after customers and spent most of his time doing anything but that. We sat ages before getting any attention paid to us and felt even more uncomfortable at so many points during the evening by being able to see so many other guests desperately seeking his attention and rarely getting it. This sporadic ‘service’ style from Bonkers and Cocky was not helped by the owner having a dinner to himself at a table by the bar and having a good old chinwag with them the whole time, also not bothering or noticing that paying customers were in the same small, barely populated room getting zero service. The chowder was ok, underseasoned. The prawn tempura was just battered, deep fried and not tempura. The scallops wrapped in bacon were a bit slimy, the 5 or 6 grains of rice with it did not make a good accompaniment and £18 for it was criminal. The monkfish special tasted of a nothing whatsoever, despite being warned how ‘spicy and morrocany’ it would be. Not a single flavour was apparent and the fish over cooked. £20 The table next to us complained about receiving the wrong dish and Bonkers basically told them it would be more hassle than any of them should have to endure to get what they actually ordered. They succumbed. The table on the other side had vouchers of some kind which Bonkers argued something about and then had to give in as this couple stood their ground. We didn’t mention our massive disappointment as we really didn’t want to get into one with Bonkers. Rather vote with our feet and never go back. Shame it’s so bad/weird/soulless etc as it would be easy to make this place a goldmine. Get some professional staff, a chef that knows seafood etc. Mostly I hate that they take the piss out of customers(who they don’t care about when they’re IN the building) by charging so fricking much for their product, even if it wasn’t crappily executed. £70 for 2×2 courses and 2 beers on a weeknight at 6pm in Leith is criminal.

Best meal in months. Great from start to finish. Yummy starters(we tried the scallops and goat cheese), delicious and well proportioned mains(lobster and sea bass) and the desserts were sweet and tasty without being too rich(raspberry trifle and brownie with peanut butter ice cream). The locations in lovely directly across from the harbor and the interior is quaint and comfortable. Small, so recommend advance booking.

C-Shack, a new venture by the owners of Port of Siam(originally in this location, now moved closer into town) is a fresh look at a seafood restaurant in Newhaven. Sure, it utilises stereotypes(oh I do like to be beside the seaside white and blue décor) and it’s name alone is a natty little play on words(sadly, no crab though when we visited) in more than one way, but we enjoyed our visit there last night, and enjoyed it more in all honesty than our visit to it’s predecessor, which hadn’t delivered on a tempting promise. C-Shack promises to serve up whatever is brought into dock, along with some more staple offerings. We tried out the Isle of Mull crab spring rolls(the home made sweet chilli dip was the outright winner on this plate) and Vietnamese salmon with orange(flavours drowned out by some dried onion, but the salmon itself was fresh and tender and was still tasty). We followed this up with the Surf & Turf burger(burger with a side of prawns and a portion of skinny fries) and the special — bream with tomatoes and samphire. The burger was a winner — a solid pice of beef, although skinny fries are forgettable at best. The bream, for me, was a little on the disappointing side — overloaded with butter(nay, drowned) and the tomatoes(cherry) roasted and placed on top — for me, the flavours were too separate and as a dish didn’t gel together super well — but the fish itself was beautifully cooked, and I’ll have samphire any day of the week. Overall, C-Shack is a a newbie, some of it’s dishes could do with a little improvement but it has good ownership running it and overall, it’s a welcome addition to the neighbourhood and I’m sure we will be back again.
