The Hogshead pub is on the corner of Castle Street and Rose Street, so a great location for a drink or bite to eat after hitting the shops. It’s part of a chain pub, but generally seems to be a bit nicer than some of the other chains in the area. Food in the Hogshead is fantastic value for money and offers a fairly decent choice of pub grub. It’s servered quickly and hot and I’ve always found it be of a good quality. The bar has a good selection of beers and other drinks, and is very good value in comparison to other Edinburgh pubs. It can get a bit rowdy in the evening so I prefer to visit for afternoon drinks, and my other half likes it for watching sports and checking the football scores on a Saturday afternoon.

One of a chain of pubs where you always know what you are going to get. Useful having it in Edinburgh, on the corner of Rose street and Castle street. I went there with 3 friends. Managed to get a table downstairs — they have a basement level and a bar on the ground floor on Rose street. Wooden floors and tables and chairs, with big screens for sport. There’s a big menu and very reasonable prices, so there will be something for everyone, including children. The beers are very good value too. It’s a bigger bar than it looks when you walk down the stairs to enter at basement level. Because it’s on lower level there’s no view from the windows — so it can seem a bit closed off.
