Amazing place to visit in Edinburgh. Every year during January William Turner’s watercolour sketches are displayed for free sponsored by Vaughan and stated in his will. Anyway, there is much more to see. Paintings from the 1400’s up to the 1900’s of Italian, Dutch, German, French and Scottish Artists. The majority of these world famous painters were well travelled and you can see their experiences well visually displayed. One of my favourite paintings of Christ was done by El Greco. You will be amazed by all the massive paintings hanging down the gallery walls and it’s impressive presence. You might have heard of Van Dyke, Rubens, Dyce, Pausson, Lotte, Raphael, Raeburn, Hamilton, Nasmyth, Haberman, Patel… A coffee shop and restaurant is located on the lower level as well as a larger gallery shop where you can print out any of their paintings, buy art books, notebooks or any other small art souvenir. I will be back for another exhibition, whoop!

The Scottish National Gallery is a place which I have visited often, and tend to notice something new each time I am there. I love the fact that it is(mostly) free, and in central Edinburgh. My favourite part is the lower level which is hidden at the back of gallery room 8(Dutch and Flemish art), here lie the ‘Scottish art’ galleries and you can view the famous Reverend Robert Walker skating picture as well as portrait of Charles Rennie Mackintosh and some beautiful Scottish landscapes. If you work your way around the ground and upper galleries chronologically you can give yourself an art history lesson as it traces painting in different periods, and see how oil paintings are done(just at the main entrance there are a few unfinished paintings, which is really weird but also really interesting as you can see the way in which the paintings are made, I don’t think I have seen this in a gallery before). Occasionally the ‘three graces’ are in Edinburgh, this sculpture is shared between this gallery and the the V&A in London 2626 and tell you about this). There are paid exhibitions(currently a David Bailey one) but I think these are on the expensive side as it is £11. I have to really, really want to see an exhibition to pay that much– the last one I saw was many years ago and was the Turner exhibition which I really enjoyed but it still seemed a lot of money as I am used to museums and galleries being free and open to all– hence 4 stars not 5.
