We had a lot of fun pretending we had a million pounds. many selfies next to the stash of cash, and also putting our face on a £20 note. If you can’t win the lottery this is the next best thing. Even the view from the museum is pretty cool… highly recommend.

This museum is on the smaller side, but it’s free and covers the history of the bank if Scotland and Scottish currency. Lots of interesting exhibits and ‘today I learned’ moments. It’s worth a visit in the walk from the Royal Mile to the art galleries.

Well worth a stop and only takes about an hour. Admission is free. The exhibits are interesting. There is a safe you can try to crack and you get a chocolate coin reward if successful. The gift shop has things that are actually fun and useful, but are inexpensive compared to most other attraction shops. As a bonus the proceeds go to a local charity. There are also a good number of places for lunch nearby. I highly recommend checking it out.

If you’ve ever had a hankering for some history on the Halifax Bank of Scotland, look no further than a breezy freebie tour around the Museum on the Mound. Aptly named, it abuts the HBOS home office, just up the walk from the National Gallery. Here’s a quick breakdown: Observing small groups of local elementary school groups: free. Obtaining a brief history lesson on the making of The Mound: free. Explications on the origin of money, currency, and insurance: free. Watching the boy utterly fail the ‘break into the safe’ quiz at the end of the exhibit: priceless. It’s probably really only worth about thirty minutes, but quite a great value for the cost!
