As far as a «good Indian» in Scotland goes, this is on-par with quite a few I’ve visited. The food was tasty, good sized portions. To be honest it was quite ‘middle-of-the-road’ for me. However, I am judging this from an «authentic» point of view. Having eaten at restaurants where the food is «authentic Indian» without a korma or jalfrezi in sight, this was lacking somewhat. But for families or groups of friends looking for a nice Indian with all the regular«british» Indian dishes, at good quality and reasonable price, this is the place to come. My Edinburgh-based friend said it was«one of the best in Edinburgh». Perhaps that’s because it’s quite unassuming and so seems like a «hidden gem». But to be honest, heralding from Glasgow with the likes of Mother India’s Café and The Dhabba, it seemed very middle-of the road. Safe, dependable, tasty Indian chow. Oh, and the naan breads were huge, but lacked the chewiness I so cherish in a good, british-Indian meal.

If you are in the mood for a decent Indian meal, Kushi’s is the place to go. Situated in Victoria Street, Khushi’s is around the corner from the Royal Mile and is just a short walk from the main shopping street in Edinburgh, Princes Street, and so it is a convenient place to reach. Khushi’s menu offers a vast choice of authentic Indian dishes including tandoori currys. It was only fairly recently that I came across this restaurant and I came here for dinner and I had a pleasant experience. I ordered samosas and pakoras for a starter which were tasty, if a wee bit dry. I then had a chicken bhuna curry for my main which was really good — full of flavour and made with fresh ingredients and it was nice and spicy without being so hot that it blew my head off and ruined my meal. My friend had a fish tikka curry which he said was distinctly average and fairly tasteless. The service was good and they have a BYOB policy on alcohol which is fantastic as it makes the meal much cheaper if you aren’t paying for the restaurants alcohol. The meal was pretty reasonably priced, and I think the two courses came to just over £10 so it was good value for money. I think some of the dishes can be hit or miss at Khushi’s, but I would like to go back again as I had a great time.
