If you want a small and welcoming traditional English pub, this is the place for you. Always an excellent selection of real ales and a brilliant atmosphere if full. Alternatively, it’s can be a nice quiet spot to relax with a drink. Staff always friendly and helpful, food and nibbles rather good too.

Traditional backstreet pub. Very cosy and welcoming. The beer quality is good but limited choice hence only 3 stars.

Has to be visited at least once when in Durham. One of the oldest, quaintest and most famous pubs around. Not very large but Cosy enough

I stopped by this place for the first time the other night having just moved to Durham. When I walked into the side closest to the street there were a few local men standing around the bar talking. The female bartender greeted me right away and then she and the guys proceeded to give me details on all the British beers I wasnt familiar with. Finally picked a good one and sat down for a pint with a friend. Bartender, friendly. People, friendly. Beer, great. Atmosphere, cozy and perfect.

Visited this lovely pub o a recent visit to Durham. To enter the pub you walk up a small alley with the wall painted telling the story of the arrival of the Monks in the city. Once inside there is a front and back bar, I sat in the back bar and had three pints of very well kept real ale. The toilets are outside at the end of the alley beside a smoking area. Its a lovely little pub that I would definately pay a another visit too if I return to Durham.

I adore a good old fashioned old man pub, and this is a good one. Small and somewhat out of the way, it hosts a good pub quiz on Monday nights and manages to avoid being too overrun by students most of the time.
