If you don’t believe in trolls and faeries, you may change your mind after visiting The Hermitage. Originally the 2nd Duke of Atholl’s favorite self-made forest glen(as history tells it, he piled hundreds of seedlings into a cannon and shot them out over the valley to get that ‘natural’ look) the Hermitage was used as a relaxing destination for opium-eating geniuses, including the likes of Williams Blake and Wordsworth, along with other recognizable poets and artists. The glen hides Ossian’s cave, boasts the biggest living tree in the UK, and the entire park owns a misty, magical atmosphere: trees are clothed in dense green moss, snowdrops grow in abundance and, interrupting the River Braan, an impressive waterfall roars over a series of boulder, the cataract carrying that type of raw power that leaves the viewer feeling slightly opiated themselves. A lovely spot for a picnic, or perhaps just a leg-stretch on a journey through Perthshire to the highlands. Highly recommended.

There is 1 main car park for The Hermitage, although you can park in town and walk up for free. The walk branches off to many routes, so suits almost all abilities. It is tree covered with a river running through and is very picturesque. The longest of the walks is about 5 hours… and 5 blisters. The ice cream man is always there for you afterwards in the car park!
