I wasn’t expecting much here but was pleased with the polite staff. I had time to kill and used the pool and spa twice(ok but not brill). I managed to get some solid room service and was impressed by breakfast(real maple syrup :) I’d booked some extras(fruit etc) and this wasn’t in the room when I arrived but they took care of it quickly and with smiles. I’d go back :) Looks like they had a recent refurb and that’s always nice in a hotel! x

Hiltons are a funny bunch — they range from the massively plush to the ‘I can’t believe they actually expect me to pay for this’ sort of affairs. The Hilton Cobham falls somewhere in the middle of the two above, maybe veering a little towards ‘I can’t believe’ but only a smidge. The bar feels a little dated but there is no questioning the quality of the stock — the sauv blanc I ordered(the house white) was a very respectable New Zealand white, in fact one of the best I have had recently, a nice surprise. We also sampled the bar food — again, pretty good, it was all deep fried for the most part but tasty and fresh and filled the gap nicely. I found the staff a little jarring, they weren’t great on communication — silly things like when they ran out of potato wedges it didn’t occur to the waiter to offer chips instead, there were lots of examples of this sort of thing. The beds were very comfy which was a shocker as they looked small and awful — I got stuck in a single bed, something I have not had to do in years!!! Breakfast was fine for me — since I was there on business and therefore out of sight of Wifey I indulged in the full fry and coffee, I enjoyed it. However my colleagues all managed to find something(genuinely) wrong with their repast — I think I was just lucky. All in all — it was fine, I’ll probably be back!

Although it is set in nice grounds, with a golf course and good leisure facilities, this is an expensive hotel in terms of value for money. Upgraded room(which was apparently a Plaza room rather than the standard room, confusingly called Executive) was reasonable size but not comparable with other Hiltons I have stayed in. However, staff were on the whole extremely helpful and friendly and made this stay a good experience. Only exception was guy in the leisure club who was really surly and failed to explain anything, including the fact that you had to collect a key for the lockers from him! Parking was free and there was plenty of space. Food was reasonable but not exceptional and the whole hotel felt a bit run of the mill to me, so I suppose the expense is because of its location. Would only come again if someone else was footing the bill!
