Just been in to get a spud and a coffee. This small well established fast food restaurant is located a minutes walk from the Cross at the centre of Chester on the east side of Bridge Street at street level. They have a range of fillings for the jacket potatoes, menu is limited and mainly potato based. The restaurant is long and narrow with a basement part for the Roman remains of the legionary bath house. They close at 6pm and have recently stopped the 50% off offer. They also have a couple of tables outside the door on the pavement.

Pretty much your standard ‘Spud-U-Like’ with all its usual imaginative potato confections. However, what lifts this branch out of the ordinary — and would give it a five star rating in its own right — is the presence of the remains of an 1800 year old hypocaust from the original Roman Bath House, down in the cellar eating area. I can’t fully describe the experience of wandering down from the garish fast-food environs of 21st century Chester, into a perfectly preserved snapshot of the 3rd century AD, but do it yourself and see what I mean. Amazing. Apparently, the location was originally the Officer’s Club of the XX Legion, and was rediscovered in 1725. Buy a baked potato and have a look.

Spud-u-like is a very original restaurant. The potatoes are okay and not too pricey and there are plenty of fillings on offer. However for the elderly or young don’t go down the stairs holding a potato in one hand and a drink in the other the stairs are perilous! A neat thing about the restaurant is that downstairs you can see the old roman method of heating their homes and so at this restaurant you can remove your hunger whilst absorbing some ancient history. Where else can you do that indoors! Overall a great place to go for a quick bite to eat and recommended.

Spud-u-like might not be the cheapest place to get lunch but it is very tempting. It’s fast, hot and filling which is just the thing you need if you are heading out for a long day’s shopping or exploring. The Chester branch is a funny shape, like many of the shops in chester, due to the nature of the two storey shopping area. This means that there is a step down to the restaurant which is no good for disabled access although during the summer they put outdoor tables so this might be an option. The strange space means that the restuarant is very long and thin and the ceiling feels quite low. There are toilets situated at the far end although you have to traverse a series of corridors to find them. The food is wholesome enough, with a number of deal options which include a soft drink and garlic bread to make more of a meal out of your potato. The potatoes on their own seem quite expensive when compared to the cost of spuds, but that is the price you pay for convienence. If you fancy something more filling than a sandwich, as quick as a burger but not as fancy as a full meal then it’s quite a good option. You can also eat in or take away.
