One visit only so brief review. Food was very good, nicely presented and fair value. Menu was about right in terms of variety without excess. Nice dining/bar areas. Orangery looked a bit soulless but it wasn’t in use at the time. Good selection of interesting local ales. Only missteps were the food seemed to take too long to get to the table given it was such a quiet lunch(40 minutes), and service was friendly but a bit uneven. Nice young ladies who might benefit from a little more guidance around customer service.

The Windwhistle Inn in Chard and Crewkerne is now run by who have done a fantastic job in creating a wonderful family friendly pub. The Quality Pub Food served at this pub represents fantastic value for money. If you are looking for one of the Best Carvery Pubs in Somerset between Chard, Crewkerne, Axminster and Ilminster then look no further. My family and I recently enjoyed a lovely Sunday Lunch Carvery which we ate in the expansive gardens whist enjoying one of the best views of the South Somerset Countryside available. I also recently attended a superb Wedding Reception at the Windwhistle Inn which also helped make my mind up to recommend this as one of the best pubs in Chard and Crewkerne. John Wright

Had a wonderful cavery at the windwhistle as part of a presentation night for our local sports club. Staff very good, food excellent. Very disappointed to find out the £200 deposit our small club put down at time of booking was only partly refundable on top of the £15 ahead for the carvery. The manageress who was happy that no damage was casused and all members behaved well advised that £100 would be retained to pay staff and cover cleaning of «table clothes». Left a very bad taste left after a most excellent night. Shame, we and other members of our club may not be going back to this lovely establishment as a result club presentation or otherwise.

Well, where to start! Have just returned from this establishment after being invited by other family members for a suprise birthday meal. Being a quiet Sunday evening the menu was VERY limited, unless you opted for the carvery. I ordered a steak for my son and a steak for myself, paid and was then told a few minutes later that steaks weren’t on because it was Sunday but they would ask the chef if he could do a couple. About 5 minutes after that, a member of staff informed me that the chef wouldn’t do them, talk about the customer always being right and«the tail wagging the dog» My son opted for the lasagne and I chose the trio of fishcakes, my other son and wife had already opted for these. After a wait of 45 minutes, a very mediocre meal arrived, I have eaten better food in a transport café for MUCH cheaper! All in all a very dissapointing dining experience and unless you are driving on the A30 because the A303 is shut and you are desperate for overpriced, pretentious, limited choice of food, I’d give this place a VERY wide berth. Needless to say, if I require a good value family meal I shall go into Chard and find the chippy!

The Windwhistle Inn is large pub and restaurant between Cricket St Thomas and Crewkerne. It has a large car park with one of the best views you are likely to get of the sweeping Somerset countryside. The Windwhistle is a large Inn, with a variety of different types of seating, form the spacious sun-soaked tables of the Orangery, that leads to outside tables that maximise the magnificent view, to the more classical pub tables in the bar. It even has its own forty seater restaurant and function room, this is a big place. Wanting a decent meal, after a dining disaster the previous evening, we would not be disappointed. Friendly and helpful staff, that seemed genuinely interested in what we had to say, was a promising start, as was the wide ranging menu and well stocked bar. The menu had a good range of dishes, from standard dishes like scampi and curry, to the daily specials, above the fireplace. My wife and I plumped for the special of prawn and monkfish Thai Curry. When the curry arrived I was staggered by the portion size, over ten sizeable chunks of monkfish, huge tiger prawns, sticky rice, a spicy Thai curry sauce and a huge bowl of noodles. It tasted as good as it looked, full of flavour, a hearty filling meal, just what we wanted. It was fairly pricey at around £14, but worth every penny. The strawberry pavlova dessert to follow was equally generous and very tasty. Rounding of the meal a good strong cup of coffee, I was tempted to give the Windwhistle five stars for the overall blend of great service, wonderful food and a brilliant setting, but that would require further visits; just wished we didn’t live so far away!
