Tasty pizza with a well cooked base. Could have done with more toppings. Garlic bread was good but too small. The coleslaw didn’t have any cabbage in it and turned orange over night. The delivery man was a bit of a spanner.

One of the all time great pizzeria’s of the roath area. They make these large square pizzas with a thick base, they deliver as well for free with a minimum spend of £8. One of their best deals is a 16″ pizza, 2 garlic breads, 5 hot wings, a large coleslaw or beans, 2 chips, desert &1.5L bottle for £16.99. If you are looking for a genuinely different pizza get Rocket Joe’s. For when you need to feed a group these square pizza have that extra quantity to dish out more. When you open the takeaway box you’ll be surprised to realize what you have been missing out all these years are the corners, get a stuffed crust and it’s the ultimate stay in bed all day food, forget knives, forks, and any other cutlery, no need for even a table. Novelty square pizza really do work as do huge 24″ pizzas, where else are you going to get them. My final point is that you are ordering quantity over quality when you buy these.

Try and think of the biggest pizza you have eaten. Now double that thought! Welcome to Rocket Joe’s! I thought that pizza’s and offers couldn’t even get any bigger until one fateful day whilst feeling peckish a couple of friends and I decided to order from Rocket Joe’s! It offers so much more than pizza. Located on City Road I’m sure it’s a hot spot for all those hungry students wasting away in their flat whilst blowing away their student loans on parties and alcohol. But I’m sure they always save a little aside for pizza! When I ordered with a couple of friends we ordered for about a family of ten! But everyone likes cold pizza the next day so it didn’t matter. We ordered the ‘mega deal’ or something along those lines and with it we got a 27 inch pizza with 2 sides of chips, 1 side of garlic bread, 2 sides of coleslaw, a 2 litre bottle of coke and a tub of ice cream all for £25.95. It may sound extreme and it is but at the time it seemed so right! You can choose up to 4 toppings to put on your pizza and add any extras if you wish. They do offer a delivery option but you need to check if it is to your area. So get ready to order the biggest pizza of your life! You can of course order smaller ones but what’s the point when there’s a 27 inch one waiting for you. Eat up and get the food baby you so desire.

Pizza is something dear to my heart. Pizza is always there when you need it. Pizza doesn’t judge you. Pizza doesn’t demand that you wear pants at the dinner table. Pizza will always love you, and so I will always love pizza. And if you’re feeling particularly love-starved, Rocket Joe’s is the pizza place for you. The reason for this is Rocket Joe’s firmly embraces the notion that quality is only preferable to quantity up to a point, and any quantity beyond that point just makes for the best pizza ever. They love this notion. Or, perhaps they abhor waste and have decided that round pizzas waste entire corners of precious cardboard boxes. Either way, Rocket Joe’s pizzas are massive constructs made to assault your face until you surrender. They make them square, too, which is why they are so huge. £15 will net you a titan of a pizza that fills a box in ways that circular pizzas cannot hope to match. Quality is all well and good, but if you’re with a group of drunks, they aren’t even going to taste it going down. Rocket Joe’s will get them all fed, fat and sleepy.

I really like the look of Rocket Joe’s, as well as the quirky name. As a package, from the outside at least, it is very reminiscent of the old 1950’s American style diners that I absolutely adore.(Diner’s are sadly dying out in the US, which is a tragedy in my estimations. I lived and worked in the US back in my early twenties, and have developed a life long love affair with this country, and the people, who are incredibly generous of nature and command my respect for many reasons. The chief cause of my admiration is that they are willing to give everything a go, regardless of whether they are likely to look a little daft in the process. This takes courage, and I know of no other nation where this freedom to tackle new challenges is met with such willingness, and enthusiasm. We Brits have something to learn from this I feel… perhaps if we didn’t take ourselves quite so seriously we would be willing to take as many risks and get as much out of life as our US cousins)… Did I just go off-topic there or what??? I guess I did! Not least because Rocket Joe’s, whilst having that lovely American look on the outside, doesn’t really continue the theme throughout… this is a real shame! Did I mention that I used to regularly go to New York? Well, as far as I’m concerned, this is the home of the American diner. I used to stay in Brooklyn, just a few doors down from one of the greatest diners in the world. Oodles of chrome everywhere, and therefore oodles of charm… and their American style pancakes with maple syrup and butter were to die for… Off-topic… Me? What? Well… what can you do when a place offers so much and delivers so little? The first time I spotted Rocket Joe’s I raced across the street to check it out. Imagine my disappointment to discover that it was just another takeaway with a couple of tables for those that choose to eat in, and is nothing like a diner at all… I could have cried! Since then I have actually bought a take-out pizza from here. The food was good, the service was acceptable and the prices didn’t burn a hole in my pocket. I have heard tell that they can be a little erratic, but I don’t have any personal experience of this. I think they’re okay! As well as pizza they do burgers and chicken with quite a few side orders. They also do a limited range of desserts as well as ice cream.

So if you ever feel like ordering pizza for 15 people try Rocket Joes. Their pizzas are the most enormous things that I’ve ever seen in my life. On top of that, they are absolutely delicious. The prices seem quite expensive at first but when you divide that by the number of people able to eat the pizza, it soon becomes cheaper! We ordered ours when we were having a girly night in. We ordered 1 pizza. Between 7…

Rocket Joe’s was a bit of a damp squib the last time I ordered a takeaway pizza from there. The pizza toppings were yummy but the base was deep and doughy and took a lot of chewing to demolish. A good work out for your jaw but denture wearers or anyone with a dodgy tooth are probably best steering clear. On the plus side, it was delivered quickly, unlike arch enemy Dominos, which can sometimes take over an hour, and the Hot Wings were fabulous(as fabulous as you can really call chicken anyhow — after all, it’s only chicken, Dave!) They have lots of offers, especially if you’re a student and the pizzas are square, not round. That amused me for a while.
