Panteli’s Of Canterbury

We were on a tour of the Canterbury Cathedral and our tour guide suggested this place. We had the fish and chips with the apple pie. This place was very quaint and family owned. The fish and chips were crunchy and flaky. A good choice for someone looking for a quick bite with the down home feel.

We had a group lunch here with the Golden Tours after we had toured the Canterbury Cathedral. We were a group of about 40 and we ate in the room upstairs. Our tour guide had called in our lunch orders before our arrival. We had a choice of three entrees… fish and chips, roasted chicken, and a jacket potato. The fish and chips weren’t the best I’ve had, but they were also far from the worst that I’ve had, the roast chicken was good and not dry, and my daughter said that the jacket potato was very good. They did a good job of taking our drink orders quickly (try the Spitfire Ale) and getting the food out to us. In spite of the fact that we were a large group, our food was warm and fresh. The servers were nice and worked hard for the group.

Panteli’s is a typically British restaurant in the centre of Canterbury, not a fancy restaurant at all, but it’s like England as it used to be. Reasonable prices, good variety of British food, not aimed at tourists but very good for tourists looking for some truly British specialities like Yorkshire pudding or steak pie, particularly for those not too keen on spending a lot of money. It’s a self-​service restaurant, but there’s also a room where the meals are served by waiters. There are also special meals for student groups.
This restaurant has survived Margaret Thatcher and a lot of changes that Canterbury has gone through in the past decades. Unlike many other places, it’s still around because they kept to their principle of giving the customers good value for their money.
They also offer good breakfasts at reasonable prices.
