I was very impressed on the whole with The Wellington. It is a large pub, with bedrooms above. Although I paid a budget hotel price, the rooms were of a standard that a top class business hotel would have been very pleased to show you. Ground coffee was a nice touch and the shower room was excellent. There is free Wi-Fi although it did not work on my first night and staff did not really know how to fix it but after that it was fine. The room was spacious as well as modern clean and fitted to a high standard with a desk as well. Breakfast is continental(English available for an extra charge) and pretty good as continental breakfasts go, served in the bar. I also had one dinner here, which was perfectly good if a little slow to arrive. There is an extensive bar menu, but not a separate restaurant. The hotel has a good bus service passing nearby and unlike the taxis, the buses in Bristol are cheap.

First visit last evening. Very enjoyable. Good selection of ales, majoring on the Bath range, plus plenty of lagers etc. Our group of five sat at a table indoors and were rewarded by table service for food and beverages! Food better quality than your average pub without charging gastro prices. Cost for the evenings drinks and dinner worked out to £22 per head which we were happy with. Staff friendly and attentive, we even tipped our waiter, with the unusual name of Jason Bytheway for his entertaining and helpful service. Recommended.

I was working round the corner from this place for a while so it sort of became my local for a few months. Being a Bath Ales managed pub, it sort of reflects the qualities of similar Bath Ale run pubs, insofar as it has good character and is in a good location. Unlike some of the others(in Bristol anyway) it’s actually quite large and being quite close to the Memorial Ground it attracts a large group of lager swilling Gas Heads on a Saturday afternoon. The food they serve is of the brasserie or ponced up British variety, but is fairly inexpensive for what you get(which is good). The other thing of note is the large garden which plays host to an annual music festival there and live music on Sunday evenings. With not a juke box, fruit machine or pool table in sight, it’s an odd mix at times but a pretty decent boozer in my book.

A Bath Ales pub at the very top of Gloucester Road, The Wellie, as my friends like to call it, is quite a nice local pub that has recently been refurbished, changing from what used to be a slightly dilapidated old man vibe to having a nice, relaxed and hip feel to it. It’s a big pub, and twists round to offer a variety of nooks and crannies with lots of wooden tables and chairs to relax on. I’ve been here a couple of times to see bands play — they have a make-shift stage to the right side of the bar and then do their thing. The bar is pretty well stocked, but the ale is their focus — Gem is the way to go! The other thing is it gets very busy on match days though, as the Memorial stadium is just down the road — stay away if you’re a City fan!

Really nice food, really nice pub. Come here with work and friends quite often. Nice selection of wine and like I said previously, the menu is lovely. Food always nicely presented and have copied a few of the items and done at home! Nice vegetable crisps with the soup and gorgeous garlic bread!

I can only speak from when using the pub before Bristol rugby games, but in my experience it’s the best pub along that stretch of road by quite some distance. It’s another excellent Bath Ales pub that also provides tasty pies and pasties on a matchday. Regulars tell me that the weekday ‘welly burger’ is good and also the beer battered fish. If you visit on a matchday will be packed but there is plenty of standing room to the front of the quite imposing building. Inside it has quite a traditional feel with a few different areas to sit in.

The pub itself is a very imposing building set on the gloucester road next to a victorian urinal(bit of history for you there). Popular amongst beer fanatics and sports fans due to the close proximity of the Memorial stadium(bristol rover fc and Bristol rfc play there). This pub has a nice décor in keeping with the area and building but it’s not overdone and actually looks authentic(compared to too many chain pubs i could mention). The beer here is bath ales and are very well kept. My favourite time here is the beer festival they do in the large beer garden, where there were 50+ beers and live music + food. Speaking of food it’s delicious and exotic, The last time i had food there I had a zebra burger(i think) which was delicious as is all the food they do. Nothing in the way of juke box, fruit machines or pool table which a pub this size warrants but some people like that about it. The staff are friendly and always happy to help. Pre or post match it’s worth a visit even if you’re not a sports fan.
