Oh how I love the Pipe and Slippers. It’s a pub I return to over and over again, for both its food and atmosphere. The pub interior is eclectic but warm and attractive with plenty of wood and leather chairs which gives it a ‘real pub’ feel. However on a warm, sunny day I’ll give it a miss as does tend to be quite dark inside. The bar sells a wide range of beers. ciders and spirits and I would personally recommend the Jacko’s Special cocktail which tastes like a slightly more sour Mojito with less ice. Trust me… it’s lush! The Pipe is also famous for it’s roast dinners with the starring role of the plate being taken by the massive Yorkshire pudding. The beef and lamb dinners both come with thick cuts of meat while if you opt for the chicken, well, you get yourself half a chicken! Pretty good going for £9. You can also get yourself a baby roast for around £4 which can be a good option if you’re feeling a little rough and your eyes are too big for your belly! Their normal menu is lovely as well and generally a bit cheaper than their roasts. I have recently ordered the stuffed pork roll and also their steak pie and I couldn’t fault either. There is something about the gravy at the Pipe and Slippers that makes me want to eat more! It can get pretty busy on the weekends with DJ’s playing a selection of funk, soul and hip hop and can get especially busy for Sunday dinners. Get yourself there early to not be disappointed. The pub also benefits from an outside smoking terrace and that rare breed that is the friendly bouncer on the weekend. It’s well worth a visit.

This pub is one of those that sticks in your mind and makes you return again and again. It has a charm about it that I look for in a pub, that makes it so comfortable and warming to come into. The crowd here is a great little mix of the young coolites and the older folk, which always gives a place a really good balance and atmosphere. I have never been in here and it be quiet; there are always people milling around smoking outside, or crammed at the bar, trying to grab a drink. The menu here looks delish; but I sadly have never come here in time– always a tiny bit too late after the kitchen is closed. I have come in time to see my friends’ plate of steaming food arrive though, and it looked real good. A nice pub all in all, but if you want to avoid the big crowds, maybe try the weekdays instead of the weekends.

The Pipe and Slippers is a proper pub, which is something of a rarity in this particular part of town. Although the stretch of road that it occupies is actually called Cheltenham Road, it is commonly referred to as Gloucester Road, which it officially becomes a little further up — but no-one seems to know exactly where this transformation takes place! Seeing as both sections of this fabled arterial route, leading to the city centre, are awash with continental style bars, it’s refreshing to find that The Pipe and Slipper is staunchly clinging to its roots, and refusing to follow suit. It’s run with a high degree of professionalism that is discreetly shrouded by a relaxed air and laid back appearance. Brim full of old wood and tasteful furnishings, there’s a solidness to the place that so many of the flimsy, faddy bars cannot even dream of matching. Leather armchairs cluster around an open fire in winter, and mismatched antique-style chairs compliment the equally attractive and serviceable tables. With a great selection of beers, and an upbeat vibe, The Pipe and Slippers is a great place to hang out with friends. They even have an enclosed terrace out the front for smokers; another rarity on this section of road.

I like going to this pub but I find some of the clientele a little ‘too cool for school’ for my liking. The bar has a wide range of alcohol and the backdrop of foreign and fake notes that customers have presumably tried to play with is amusing. It can get rather packed in here over the weekends so I find the best thing to do is grab a board game from the stack at the back and head to a corner for a quiet, slightly tipsy game of Monopoly. The edition of Pieminister pies puts this rather average pub on the map and if you like it rowdy then this should be your pub of choice. The Pipe & Slippers is a lot quieter midweek and as a result the bar staff are a lot more friendly, probably because that get the chance to breath before serving the next customer.

I really liked the Pipe and Slippers or the Pipe and Slappers as we affectionally called it when I first came here, it seemed to exude Bristol cool. Then I came back here one evening and I was a bit taken aback by some rather curt service. Then I came here with a friend, raving about what a great pub this was and was appalled when the service wasn’t just curt but outright rude! I have some friends who live near here and after a long hiatus, planned to return for a drink here, I wasn’t at all sad when we ended up going to the Bell instead which is laid-back and friendly which in my book, is far cooler. Not as good as it thinks it is, I’d far rather half a pint in the far friendlier sister pub The Windmill.

From the outside this little pub looks attractive with wooden gates, and in many ways it is your pretty standard English pub! The best thing about this place is its garden, which in the summer fills up with people enjoying a drink out in the sunshine. They have large outdoor tables too, which makes it good for groups. The interior however could do with a bit of a revamp — it is fairly dingy and small and there’s not much seating space, especially for larger groups. The prices, as with most pubs in Bristol, are fairly standard — you could expect to pay around £3 for a pint. The general customers are over 18 year olds and students alike, it is not really a family pub or somewhere to take the kids. The food however is brilliant if you love pies, being that tt is a traditional ‘pie pub’! Aside from the food however, I wouldn’t say it is a great place to visit and in my opinion there are better pubs just up the road. The garden is great in the summer, but in the winter months I don’t think it is much to shout home about.

The first time I went to The Pipe & Slippers was in my second year of university, and at the time its low lighting, attractive bar staff and funky hiphop tunes seemed just about the coolest thing ever. A few years down the line and I’m still a fan, even if I’ve come to realise there are a few more venues in Bristol which do a more characterful version of cool. The Pipe & Slippers will always be a good place for going with a big group of friends at the weekend, accompanied by invariably great(if loud) music and a solid selection of drinks. This is where the raucously exuberant atmosphere triumphs… so don’t even attempt intimate conversations, catch-ups à deux or a quiet drink.

People are always banging on about the Pipe and Slippers and I find it hard to see why. Yes it’s an ok boozer with a big selection of Bristol’s finest Pie Minister pies, but it is fairly ugly inside and it’s outdoor area looks out over a really unattractive and busy junction of Gloucester Road. Often if I am going to see a band at The Croft, I’ll pop in here for a few pints but I would never go out of my way to stop off. I have heard the Portugese-style tapas is really good and there is a good selection of Djs playing here at weekends. It also stocks Westons cider and Bristol Beer Factory real ales

The Pipe and Slippers is a trendy bar on the Cheltenham Road, masquerading as a cosy, «old man» type pub. The furniture and walls are all made of dark wood and the lighting is dim, giving a nice, homely ambience. They serve the usual range of lagers and ales and it’s the perfect place for pre-gig drinks before heading over to live music/comedy venue Metropolis, located directly opposite. Something to watch out for is that the toilets are identified with blue and pink slippers, rather than your normal male and female signs. This has been known to catch out a few of the clientele — my friend recently walked into the gents to find a girl standing there looking rather confusedly at a urinal.

In my opinion The Pipe & Slippers is mildly overrated considering how much I hear about it from friends and work colleagues. The best thing about it by far is the fact that it is a Pieminister pie pub, so you know you’re going to get great food if you choose to eat here for dinner. But with a handful of other(better) pubs offering the same tasty pies elsewhere, I’m really struggling to see the appeal. The pub itself is situated in one of those really awkward places that you can’t park anywhere near without looking for a space for 20 minutes. Very annoying. Once you do find a space or have walked there from somewhere else, you’ll find the interior quite small and dingy. If you’ve heard great things about this place expect to be a little under whelmed as you first walk in. The bar prices are fairly reasonable however and they do have a decent selection of beers, continental lagers, etc, etc. It certainly isn’t a bad boozer by any stretch of the imagination, just not as good as I was led to believe.

The popularity of this place really does mystify me. A lot of my friends go here a fair bit and I really can’t fathom why. The interior consists of one fairly small rectangular room with absolutely no notable features to speak of(well, there’s a bar I suppose) which gets extremely packed and uncomfortable. Out the front there’s a smoking area(I hesitate to call it a garden) with a couple of chairs crammed into a small space right next to the main road. The one plus, I suppose, is the location, but surely being near better things isn’t that much to boast about.

Taking a different slant on how pubs are usually named, this theme continues throughout. With regular DJ nights and a clientèle that can be a bit trendier than thou, this has all the trappings of a bar. So whilst they call themselves a pub, and have various pub-like traits(such as a good selection of ciders on tap), it’s a bit misleading to call it that. There’s food on offer. It looks a bit fancy but still tastes good and should fill you up. They have Bristol’s famous(at least in Bristolian circles) ‘Pieminister’ pies, which are worth trying. Only eat during the day, in my opinion. With people constantly in and out it from six onwards it doesn’t make for the best dining experience. It’s not really about the food though. Go here for the DJ nights and for something between a pub, a restaurant, and a bar, which has taken the best bits of all three.

A non-descript comfy place to settle down while away a few hours. Not the cheapest of places, but the prices do keep out alot of the rowdier members of Stokes Croft and the Gloucester Rd lot which is nice. The spirit selection is better than average– plenty to choose from and the staff are polite and can hold down a decent conversation.

The Pipe is a bit like an old, old friend– always there for you, but occasionally a bit too noisy to cope with if you have a headache. If you pick your moments and moods well, it remains one of the most relaxing, generally friendly pubs on Gloucs(Cheltenham) Road. Plus points include the Pieminster Pies which are always on the menu(and always go down smooth), a fairly decent collection of spirits, good music, and staff that care a little bit about where they work… Minus points include the lack of a smoking garden(BIG minus as you have to sit in the tiny gallery at the front and breath in petrol fumes with your sulphur dioxide!), occasional overcrowding and the fact that most, if not all, of the patrons don’t really often seem to want to talk to strangers. It’s the kind of pub that can leave you very lonely whilst simultaneously having to apologise to a stranger for having to rest your pint on their shoulder… Oh, and watch out for the curly haired ginger builder… what a menace!

The Pipe and Slippers is a pub we need more of. It has that old style pub feel but not in a toby inn commercialised ‘this is what ye olde pubs should be like’ paint by numbers kind of way. Almost evey and table differ in shape size and style, the walls are a lightish olive green with a mirror here and there but the decoration if anything is minimalist. The location is central yet local, it’s smart inside, but still a pub, the atmosphere is vibrant yet calming. The feeling I get when I walk in here is that there was a huge explosion involving traditional pubs, coctail bars and a few restaurants and using the bits they found out of all these places they buit something new, something different. The bar offers a good selection of real ale, cider and cocktails, in fairness everyone with an ounce of taste is catered for. The food is good(and by all accounts improving with the appointment of a new chef) pie-minister pies are however the stand out from the menu. The clientelle are a mixed bunch which is what you’d expect from the area(being montepelier going on st pauls, cotham going in kingsdown), to clarify it is a nice place to be, especially if you want to look cool in an unconformist sense. I do have a few problems with it though, the staff are so chilled out they’re frozen, even if the bar is empty it can take an age to get served. If anything it’s too popular and getting a seat even on a school night can prove difficult. The smoking area all though fenced from the main road is still on it and it is no where near as nice outside as it is in. With that being said it is a great place for all ages to come and chill out. The food and drink are well above average and with the new chef this place will continue to thrive. recommended

In my opinion, the best thing about this pub is that it serves Pieminster pies– they are definitely the best and the tastiest. The Pipe and Slippers is situated at the junction between Stokes Croft and Cheltenham Road so it’s not an upmarket neighbourhood– it’s quite alternative and, to be honest, the inside is a bit dingy. But on the plus side, there’s a good range of cider(very important for a West country pub!) and the drinks aren’t too expensive

The Pipe and Slippers is a lovely, cosy sort of place, where you can choose from a great selection of alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages, and generally escape the hubbub of Stokes Croft. There are pub games, such as chess and backgammon, available, and you are always greeted with a cheery smile. The punters range from young and trendy types to university professors to builders, and so is pretty much a cross section of the street outside, such is the broad appeal of the place. There is a real fire, comfy seats and tables, and a dim-lit atmosphere that’s perfect for chilling out before or after a heavy night on the town.

This is a cool little pub nearing the bottom of cheltenham road around ten minutes from the city centre. IT’S a quite hip and trendy pub that fits in with it’s surroundings. The usual crowd is quite diverse with a good vibe echoing from inside. The outdoor seating enable you to have a smoke in nice settings or just enjoy the goings on of this bustling area. If you are around the bottom of glouster road ao in town it is worth the walk to enjoy the atmosphere.
