Lovely selection of breads, cakes and treats which are all resonantly priced. Staff are lovely and the place has a great old-world feel. One small gripe is the pies/pasties are always cold. They offer to warm it… In a microwave. Why waste the lovely pastry in a microwave? I’m always horrified when this is offered.

What a fantastic selection of bakery goodness — bread, rolls, cakes and pastries. A gorgeous smell pervades the walls here and entices you in every time! They have a wonderful choice of lunchtime snacks and savoury treats to get you salivating. my favourite are their pizza sticks and their iced finger buns — pretty standard i know, but they just taste so good! The food here is cheap as chips, too. Expect to get at elast 4 items for less than £2.

I used to be fortunate enough to live in Montpelier just a few doors down from Herbert’s Bakery. Sometimes I’d be getting up(or still be up) at about 5am when the bread making starts. Warm and beautiful smells of fresh bread would waft over the garden walls and float into our kitchen. I could stand there, bathed in this smell forever. It is in The Split Tin that I get that smell again. It is not the smell of any old bakery, but rather one that makes bread with love. The pizza sticks, mince pies, wholemeal pasties and sausage rolls at The Split Tin are all made fresh and daily; sometimes flying off the shelves so quick they have to close early. This isn’t an in convenience but rather how it should be — not a high street place with stacks of frozen stuff ready but a natural human-run bakery. A table outside with local fruit and veg and some of the creamiest meringues inside — this place is a life line for its community and well worth the visit.

This bakery has a really olden feeling, but that’s at no detriment to the quality. Situated on Coldharbour Road, it feels like it’s fairly cemented in the local residential community. Their wholemeal bread is extra special, and they’ve got a good selection of baked goods and cakes. The pasties have always been really good from here, as are the flapjack and caramel shortbreads. The best thing though, is the olden style till that’s at the far end of the shop. Give your change to one of their charity boxes and you can leave with happy stomach and good conscience.
