Before visiting the wee village of Westbury-on-Trym I had never really heard of The Shaw Trust before. They’re something to do with, I am now aware, helping disadvantaged and disabled people find and prepare for work. As with all other charities it is their shops that provide a lot of their funding and advertising. The Shaw Trust on Canford Lane has done little to break the mould from other charity shops — so little so in fact, that I am now beginning to think all charity shops are made by the same company. The ambience is, as one would expect, nothing short of a time warp hovering gently somewhere in 1942. Everywhere, the elderly, teetering and pottering about the place like bees; lots of old pairs of shoes, outdated hats, a vast selection of books(predominantly about the war) and of course, some military-esque music creeping out from the tinny speakers. For the gentleman shopper however, alas, there is little of interest here. The clothes, shoes and hats are all for the ladies. You’d best wait by the book section until it’s time to leave.
