Yes it’s an Australian sports bar … but don’t let that put you off. There’s much more than meets the eye to this laid-back pub, popular with students and locals alike, all looking to escape the mayhem of the city centre. It’s a great rendezvous for a night out in Clifton. The atmosphere is so über chilled that you might find come midnight you still haven’t moved on to your next destination(it’s happened to me on many an occasion). With it’s outdoor seating and heaters, it’s popular with the smoking brigade too. Even if you don’t smoke, it’s great to keep everyone happy, isn’t it? I first stumbled across this venue during the 2010 World Cup — England may have disappointed — but the venue didn’t, I found myself coming back although the football hype had faded to enjoy a game of pool and a jug of reasonably priced Pimms. Give it a go, you don’t know what you’re missing!

Situated in what used to be the Clifton station house, Roo bar is a great big building attracting nice big crowds of polyester clad, lager swilling blokes. If you like football or sports in general, getting rowdy with other like minded individuals and eating sub standard burgers, then you’ll love it in here. I’m being slightly unfair as I do like sport and have been here a number of times to watch big sporting events and it always has a great atmosphere and they really no there audience as they have TV’s practically everywhere you look so you’re never really in danger of missing anything. Not sure I would recommend going here other than to watch a big sporting event though. Poor choice of beers and pretty crap food.

Sport sport sport and more sport. I guess that makes it Australian(?) This is a popular pub with students and it’s obvious why. The atmosphere is fun & lively. It’s great for large groups; probably more stag do like groups than Woman’s Institute type groups, unless any of the ladies want to watch the F1 racing, league rugby, division 1 football and play darts all at the same time. I mean who wouldn’t. The pub itself is actually in a beautiful old building. It looks almost like the old station house, and probably is, being so close to the railway track and all(they don’t call me the bullet for nothing). But the classic, tasteful impression the building gives you ends the minute you walk through the door. It is like the lord of tacky pub interiors has vomited all over the walls. It’s not as nasty as I’m making it sound. It suits the lively atmosphere they are looking for and there are some great large booths and sofas in the seating areas. The food isn’t great, but it is cheap. My advice would be, come here to watch a game with your mates, but get here early to guarantee yourself a seat/table, and drink a lot of lager. The quiz is pretty good as well, but I would say that, we won, and the prize money bought us a lot more beer. Woo. There is a fair bit of mobile phone cheating that goes on during their quiz though… not that we’d ever do a thing like that… Just don’t bring a date here. Your mind and eyes will end up wondering onto one of the sporting events being shown on the screen. Trying to fake an interest in whatever the other person is saying will become increasingly more difficult.
