I walk past Joy almost every single day and the window displays never cease to inspire my clothing choices. Inside there’s an excellent array of independent or up and coming designers and a range of prices to match. Unlike similar(albeit lower priced) boutiques on say Gloucester road, the clothes are generally good quality. There’s also a huge range of quirky gifty items, cards and other homeware paraphenalia, along with the odd accessory or shoe dotted around the place. For female clothing there’s little better in Bristol. If you’re looking for something individual and quirky without straying too far off the beaten track, Joy offers the best in accessible individuality at equally accessible prices.

This is quite a difficult shop to categorise as there are just so many things for sale here — clothes, jewellery, novelty gifts, homeware… Joy, situated on the Triangle, is a curiosity of a shop –a bit like Urban Outfitters but for grown-ups. Selling graphic t-shirts and hoodies for men and floaty, floral print dresses for the women, one of my favourite parts of this shop is at the front — the gift area. Novelty toys, comical mugs and cute wrapping paper are just some of the great buys here. Despite the upmarket façade this is the kind of place where you can buy a fire breathing nun, a ‘grow your own’ boyfriend and Buddha pencil-toppers! The clothes are a lot more sophisticated than the gifts but I often find they can be quite expensive compared to what you can get in Broadmead or even Park Street.

A shop for everyone and nearly everything! Love the humour and general atmosphere in this shop. The novelty items and cards on offer are genuinely funny and great alternative presents for people you are not entirely sure what to buy for(I got my Secret Santa Christmas present for a work colleague from here!) Although their prices have always been slightly high they have not risen unlike most other stores so are now quite competitive. Currently Joy have a beautiful collection of dresses and summer clothes that you really won’t find anywhere else, the floral prints and nautical styles are on-trend without being tacky or predictable. The mens clothes are great too; they have a great range of comic book and retro style t-shirts that are a particular favourite. I am always greeted as I go in, offered help and given great assistance and advice on the fitting rooms. Joy offers something a bit different; great clothes, great service and great atmosphere.

This shop has become somewhat of a banker for Christmas and Birthday presents for wither my brothers or mates– they always have funny tee shirts that will certainly put a smile on your face, even if they are a little expensive. But the raw present material is all of their little gadgets and books they have on sale. They have everything form mugs to books, in fact they have everything you would want to put on your coffee table, including games. Always worth poking your head round the corner.

With beautifully bright and colourful window displays I never manage to walk past Joy in Clifton without popping in. It’s not a place to find a bargain, with dresses around the £45 — 60 mark, but it is the shop to pick up something bang on trend, yet unique. They seem to specialise in shiny, sparkling dresses and floral scarves, although they also stock comfy pumps, tiny clutch bags and retro jewellery. I must confess I rarely buy anything here, and tend to feel a bit anti-climatic after each visit. Even though everything Joy stocks looks fun and interesting, there’s nothing so special that would cause me to pay the pricey prices. Great for the odd stocking-filler gifts, if your friends appreciate mugs with slogans and novelty shower caps — which mine do!

My favourite ever clothes brand(or it would be if I could afford to ship it over here) is US based ModCloth. Joy is my UK fix of something similar — vintagey, vaguely overpriced new clothes that are different from what you see in Topshop or Primark(although not so different it’s not fashionable). I am a fan. Cute studded pumps share shop space with oversized key necklaces and all the lad’s stuff has a sense of humour and an appealing indie edge to it(I like boys dressed that way!). I am currently in love with a cheap thing — bright tights for 6 quid, and an expensive thing, a grey lace coat for £180 they have on display. Love, life, laughter indeed(as their motto goes).

For some reason I really love this shop. It is kind of a cheap Urban Outfitters I guess, with cards and silly gifts, although verging on the ‘hilarious’ penis jelly mould sense of humour at times. They mostly have instant-fashion clothing for guys and gals, lots of accessories. They always manage to dress their window really enticingly. Expect to pay about £25 for a top, boys tshirts are £30 and have fun slogans.

My girlfriend loves this place for its unusual clothes and changing selection of stock. They tend to do quite good deals in the sales, and the clothes are all good quality. They also do a range of fun birthday gifts/cards.

Joy is popular fashion pit-stop on Queen’s Road: vintage-style t-shirts, quirky home accessories make Joy a kooky and less expensive alternative to All Saints and Karen Millen further down the road. This is a good choice for a shop if you are looking to buy presents for your friends but are unsure as to what they will like.
