Cute and stylish with Great cocktails. It’s a little smarter than surrounding area which is nice change. Can be booked out for birthdays etc. Worth dropping in for a jamaican mule

Hush Hush I personally really like this bar, but being a money aware student their prices put me off going there too often. It’s a fairly small bar, with not much seating area, and the prices are expensive — however they have a really wide variety of drinks — especially old and traditional whiskeys! The music here is great and they’re always playing new stuff, especially drum & bass. They also have a regular in house DJ called DJ Derek, who’s about 70 years old! He’s a brilliant reggae DJ and this is pretty much the only place he plays at in Bristol — so worth checking out when he’s on and popping along to hear his stuff. He’s actually playing at Bestival this year too! Another bonus to Hush Hush is that it’s free entry most nights — and even on special nights they only charge 2 – 3 pounds. It’s only the prices of drinks that make it an expensive night — but I guess this is good for adults because it keeps the students away!

Just at the bottom of Gloucester Road near the arches, Hush Hush is one of the more trendy and slick bars on the Gloucester Road. This is both a good and bad thing — former because if you want to stay in the area but are after a place with a club feeling rather than a pub, this is the only one before you get to town; the latter because it doesn’t quite work as the swanky bar it’s trying to be. It’s been taken over by new management recently, which has changed the décor and made a big difference to the overall look. It’s a lot more plush than it used to be, but still manages to retain a bit of dignity about it. There’s also quite a focus on live music now, with an emphasis on Dub step and chilled out drum’n’bass, which seems to bring in the crowds more than previously. It’s quite a haunt for the local students, but it can easily get far too overcrowded as the bar itself is very narrow and doesn’t allow for much room in a busy environment.

Not really my thing, hence the low score… but perhaps if you’re a fan of dubstep you can overlook the neon glare and expensive lager and the banal chatter of the ‘yah’ crowd that lean against the walls in an attempt to look cool. I however, couldn’t. Hush Hush bar doesn’t sit well in the Cheltenham/Gloucester Rd. It wants to be trendy and slick, and yet the people who hang out in the area are more casual, hippier than that. The music is ultra-loud, the bar is too narrow to properly dance in. The punters are few and far between, and the fancy dress nights are an obvious attempt to appeal to students. It works, but still doesn’t add any real soul to the venue.

Nicely decked out, Hush Hush is a music oriented bar just next to the junction at the bottom of Gloucester Road. There’s been a change in management fairly recently and the new lot have brought a renewed emphasis on music, with dubstep and various other sorts contemporary dance music getting a look. All the better for the change of management, this is the only place I can think of where you’ll regularly get people dancing on Gloucester Road. There’s a great atmosphere here and they’ve managed to come across as stylish without seeming ostentatious or too trendy. Although some of the acts they put on might make you think otherwise this isn’t an abrasive place. People are easygoing and it’s candlelit, rather than just having loads of disco lights. They’re only open Wednesdays through Saturday, which is a bit annoying but then when they do open you’re more or less sure to get a decent night out. With all the dancing it can get a bit warm, but there’s garden out the back offers a bit of space if you get claustrophobic. Hush

Hush Hush bar is an oddity of the Gloucester Rd area. Occasionally there are some fun events happening there, such as great bands and DJs, fancy dress parties and the like, but most of the time it remains almost empty, and seemingly desperate — trapped in a neon, TV-dominated nightmare. The music is often too loud to talk, and it’s just so thin that you can’t shake your booty
