Gulzar Fancy Goods is one of those haphazard shops that sells a weird selection of products that soar to the ceiling in towering bundles. Stocking everything from electrical extension leads through to a dazzling array of plastic kitchenware items, cleaning products, cutlery and crockery and a whole lot more besides. I even found the rarest of things amid a stack of frames wedged sideways onto one of the shelves; an ornately wooden framed section of goat skin with the hair still intact, with Arabic writing on a piece of parchment mounted in the centre. Unfortunately, I can’t for the life of me translate what it said. So, essentially the product range is extremely comprehensive, if a little bizarre. In fact, the only thing that they don’t seem to have is room to move around. The window is as hectic as the shop, items seemingly dropped at random anywhere they fall. These kind of shops used to be an awful lot more common ten years ago, but sadly they are being updated or replaced by businesses that stick to a winning formula, with stock neatly assembled in humdrum order. I now rely on the pound shops on Gloucester Road and North Street as well as Gulzars for a chaos injection.

If before they had gone under Woolworths were to compress their entire stock into a time capsule, then mix this with the stock of several other hardware shops and hide it in Easton, only to explode into a tiny hobbit sized store on St Marks Rd a couple of months later — this is it. The enormous range of such a vast collection of stuff is unbelievable. All electrical goods from extension leads, to plugs, to light bulbs lead on to every canned or tinned oil and degreaser you can imagine. Rope, nylon and string adjacent to Islamic books, incense and paint. The lists go on and on in all categories. But the quality is really good too. This isn’t cheap and tacky stuff — but rather good quality hardware, software, any ware. An incredible little find.

I have too admit shops like this are a little vice of mine You know the sort, you look in the window and you have no concept as to what it is they actually sell! The shelves seem to be flowing with many wonderful knick-knacks. This place is no exception, as the writing under the name suggests: «GULZARFANCYGOODS islamic books, house ware, gifts, etc goods». From electrical tape that ranges from all the colours of the rainbow, to picture frames that seem to be shouting at you to have some water colour painting, or elaborate mansion picture inside. I guess this shop could be described as the next step up from a post office. It doesn’t offer any similar services, but it is full of things you could need for day to day living, repair items, household fitings, tape, it’s just all a bit too much to list.
