Everything you could want from a greengrocers really. Loads of fresh variety at fair prices and some nice friendly staff! Me and the boyf have been determined to buy all our fruit and veg from here because it’s yummy and local and they’re the only one I know of that accept Bristol pounds. We are starting to juice too and this would be costing a lot more if we were buying from a supermarket. There’s something really satisfying and almost smug about buying really fresh, a little bit more grubby and wonky, and a whole lot more delicious produce from the greengrocers! They also do little extra treats like jam and chutney!

I’m on a mission at the moment to use supermarkets as little as possible. Spurned on by my love of The Bristol Pound and supporting local, independent businesses — I’ve found my greengrocer, and I love it! Here you’ll find wonky carrots, dirty potatoes and odd shaped oranges; just how the come out of the ground(or tree) and how they should be. Gardeners Patch sell pretty much any standard fruit and veg you would want. You wont find too much international out of the ordinary, but you will find inspiration if you’re trying to think of a meal to cook. The staff are really nice and very helpful. I asked lots of potato related questions: best for mashing, roasting etc and they were happy to help. I’ve by a weeks worth(2 bigs bags) of fruit and veg for less than £10 each time I go. They accept Bristol Pounds and ‘Text to Pay’

This place really do have the best produce i’ve seen in bristol. Just walking in you get hit with all the great earthy and sweet smells which you so don’t get in a supermarket! They are really inexpensive as well, i’d say cheap BUT that word makes the products sound well naff, i recently bought: A bag of new potatoes, spinach, peaches, 3 peppers, carrots, lettuce and tomatoes and figs for under a fiver, what?! where do you ever get all that, at such good quality for that amount of money. The staff are always really helpful and friendly, yes it gets busy at times but that’s a sign that its good stuff. The que always goes quickly and theres never a bad atmosphere as people seem excited but such great natural things. They have such a wide variety of fruit and veg as well you will never ever be stuck on what to cook if you pop in there. Don’t waste loads of money on cruddy supermarket, polished vegetables that have no smell, go to a proper grocers, pick up things, smell them… get your vegetable juices going… you won’t regret it i promise xx

Gloucester Road is a haven for those who like to buy local from independent businesses and there is no place I love supporting more than Gardners Patch. The prices make it well worth doing your weekly veg shop here as there are always deals on so-called luxury items like blueberries and raspberries if they are in season. They always stock a good range of the basics which are always fresh and in good condition. And there is a good choice– several ranges of tomatoes and lettuce as well as bagged salad and the fruit is juicy and tasty. The food also keeps for longer than the over-preserved supermarket varieties and it’s veg shops in the old style with scales, brown paper bags and stripey plastic carriers.

Right — there are two very similar fruit and vege stalls nearby each other on Gloucester Rd, and this is definitely the better of the two! If you walk a couple of hundred yards further up the road you’ll find the other, which has slightly less stock and has slightly higher prices — so my advice is to stick to Gardner’s Patch. The stall is pretty much your standard fruit and vege store apart from this one offers a great range of local produce. The place itself is more like a market stool than anything else, but it’s a permanent fixture and open every day. I would recommend going here as oppose to Tesco or Somerfield for two reasons — you can trust the produce is fresh, and it’s definitely much cheaper. Overall, a great local green grocers.

Living pretty much in the centre of the city, it can be surprisingly difficult to get hold of good quality fresh fruit and veg from the so-called«Express», «Metro» and«Local» supermarket chains on my doorstep. This little green grocers on the Gloucester Road is about a 20-minute walk away from where I live, but it’s definitely a trip worth making. The difference in quality really is quite astounding. No more bruised apples or brown bananas — hurrah! I start to feel healthier simply by looking at what’s on offer and I find it definitely encourages my latent desire to cook(sometimes)! The staff are always very friendly as well, and to be honest, I really haven’t got a bad word to say about this place. Veg out.

If Gloucester Road is to effectively stave off the rise and rise of faceless yet ‘convenient’ supermarkets, consumers need to realise just how good places like Gardners Patch really are. Yes, you will have to walk about ten doors up from Sainsbury’s, or down from Tesco’s, but believe me, it’s worth it. Some great deals in there lately have been beautifully ripe avocados for 25p each, a large bag of rocket for 65p, and juicy clementines for about 10p each. Wonderful, brilliant, super.

Great fruit n veg shop packed with goodies. You will have to just catch a stallholder’s eye to get served as it gets a bit difficult to maintain a queuing system with the narrow walkway — you cannot tell who is browsing and who is buying. For those working the nine to five, this opens at silly o’clock in the morning and also on a Sunday.

Wonderful, brilliant, super fruit and veg at incredible prices. Fresh, too, unlike what you get at the supermarkets.
