When I visited this gallery for the first time, I remember walking out after about 5 minutes, as I really didn’t get it. The gallery is located on a back alley, only noticeable if you follow the small sign board pointing towards it. The walk down the little alley actually really built up the anticipation for me, and maybe that’s why I was more disappointed when I walked in. The place is just a square room, with exhibitions hanging on the walls around. The person at the desk wasn’t very friendly when I went, and the work itself was so-so. Exhibitions here rotate on a weekly basis, and the gallery is available to hire at £275 a week. Call me crazy, but I think that’s too high an amount for a week’s exhibit, especially since I find that it isn’t very well promoted, and doesn’t even get that much passing trade.

Despite it’s slightly weird location on a sort of dingy backstreet off Corn Street, the centrespace gallery is a great place to exhibit work of your own or see some home grown local art. The centre space has a really fast turnover of work; most exhibitions only run for a week, but this means that visitors get to see something new every time they go in. The gallery isn’t huge; there is room for about 16 pieces of work, but with a space to socialise in too it makes for a very cute little gallery.

Probably the most challenging art gallery in Bristol, Centrespace exhibitions hurtle through taking up a week at a time from Saturday to Wednesday(a changeover on Thursday). All local artists, you will find something astonishing every time you visit. Dedicated to a wide range of styles but it will largely be contemporary — you’ll have to look hard to find a nice watercolour landscape — and is so very Bristolian. All works are for sale direct from the artist, the gallery is just an exhibition space. They have private views on Friday evenings — just sign up on their website to get invited to these. Nearer xmas they have more traditional displays and sales for presents which is great stuff too! To get here you have to go down a very dodgy looking alleyway off Corn Street. There are little billboards directing you down and it is further back than you think it should be, but it is there on your right!
