Umi Hotel Brighton

Price and location are great. Staff is great as well, and they even gave us a free upgrade. Partying kids can be loud on warm weekends but I slept well, even with my room facing Pryzm. The room came with an ironing board and iron, coffee maker (well-​supplied) and even an automated trouser press. They also gave me an international power adapter to borrow since I forgot mine. Desk and two seater table as well.
The room had some general wear and tear such as a cracked picture frame, but it’s an old building and if you want five star perfection then go pay for it. This hotel was great for a couple of weekends in Brighton. Perfect location, beach view, AMAZING prices.

— The room was dusty, and didn’t look as though it had been cleaned correctly, especially the round table, the leather effect sofa and the window cills all of which were very dirty.
— The bathroom is in dire need of refurbishment with cracked tiles, a broken marble top by the basin and a scratched and marked door.
— The bath still had hairs in it from a previous occupier.
— The plaster and paint on the wall by the widow is flaking and the room is in need of re-​decorating.
— The bed is probably the most uncomfortable I have ever encountered in a hotel room with the mattress springs sticking into your back and the whole bed creaking with every movement.
— The windows look as though they haven’t been cleaned in an awful long time, thus ruining the only redeeming feature of the room (the sea view).
— There were teenagers shouting and generally making lots of noise outside the hotel until 1.30am.
— There was a family upstairs who allowed a child to run up and down the floor for three hours (from 10.30pm 1.30am), until I finally had to ask reception to intervene (which they did to their credit).
— I realise some of these issues are outside of the hotel’s control and some may appear to be minor but all in all the experience was certainly not what one would expect from a room at the price we paid.
Be suspicious of any positive reviews on herethe rooms are not worth more than £49-£55 per night.

The hotel is quite poor. The beds are firm but bouncy and singles are quite narrow. The bathrooms are well stocked, but awkward to use. In fact I scraped off some skin on a protruding screw trying to exit. There is a lift which takes a while and lazy people on the 2^nd floor use it. There is a bar area with tv, but prices are higher then neighboring pubs. I hear there is parking somewhere but didn’t use it. The best feature is location and price. The hotel right in the heart of the night life. The price is cheaper than a lot of options around, but given the above it is a question of priorities.

Awful! Room was extremely dirty, and dark. Pillows were as flat as can be and they did not provide enough towels. TV did not work, but the people’s next door did I know this because we could hear it clear as day through the walls… Almost decided to go home and loose the money rather than staying in that dump.

If this place was in a better location say 1 minute in any direction it would well be worth 4 stars but I can’t help but imagine how annoying the students and night clubbers would be until the wee hours of the morning, I should know I’m one of them. The hotel itself is pretty good and Matt’s review pretty much covers that side of things.
However, if you are going to be one of those people out until the wee hours of the morning then I couldn’t imagine any where better to go but why would you pay good money when you won’t even know whats happening?

I stayed one night at the Umi Hotel Brighton (formerly the Belgrave Hotel). It was a relatively pleasant experience overall, but I mean no word of a lie when I say to you: The most important thing I packed was my earplugs.
The Umi Hotel’s location is both a blessing and a curse. It is on the seafront on Kings Road, and so has a good selection of rooms with excellent sea views, and you can walk to pretty much anywhere in Brighton City Centre in 15 minutes.
However, it is also on the corner of West Street — Brighton’s nightlife centre, and sits directly opposite the Oceana superclub, and backs on to the Walkabout club. Both of these generate noise — of both the musical, and non-​musical (i.e. inebriated screaming and shouting) varieties until the wee-​small hours of the morning.
I stayed in a «Double Executive» room on the first floor; a corner room with sea views and one side onto West Street. The room was well-​furnished and clearly renovated quite recently, and the bed was comfortable and eminently sleepable! However, Brighton’s version of amazing spring weather (gale force winds and driving rain) did not agree with one of the windows in my room, producing a small puddle on the windowsill due to a failing seal. To the hotel’s credit, a staff member came up to inspect the problem immediately as it was reported, and arranged towels to ensure there would be no damage.
Breakfast was also good (and included in the room price I paid — a little on the pricey side even for Brighton, but okay), a full English delivered hot, rapidly, and of ample portions! Friendly and efficient staff and comfortable surroundings made this on the whole an agreeable stay.
But, seriously, don’t forget your earplugs if you value your sleep.
