I always like a little bit of ethnic variety in my food cupboard and the Turkish Market is a great stop off to cover the Eastern flavours. I would agree with India’s comments on the extensive olive bar that they have and they are priced more at the rates of Morocco than the Salisbury’s down the road. This means that you get a lot of olives for your money and they taste top notch also. In general, they have a wide range of products and you can also get drums of olive oil at very competitive prices. They have a lot of homemade breads and sweet pastries also for sale and some random fruit and veg. I would actually prefer if they kept this inside the shop as Lewes road is a bit of a busy road for storing fresh produce on the shop front. The staff are pretty friendly and will happily point you in the right direction for your desired purchase. It’s certainly a handy store to have close by and stays open until 11pm throughout the week. If you want to support an independent grocery, then you will do far worse than patronise the Turkish Food Market.

After reverting back to vegetarianism after 2 years of extreme carnivorous behaviour I can see this market being a saving grace on the road back to healthy eating. This place is full to the brim of beautiful aromas and ideas. And with such a range of exotic herbs and spices, it’s a great alternative to the masses and you won’t be sort of inspiration for dinner. Although passing the on the variety of sausages and meats, there are huge bags and containers that hold tastes from around the world. Fresh fruit and veg, and the collection of olives is inspired. Also catering, albeit a little less vigorously, many other products you’d hope to find in a food market. But although huge in options, the pricing is slightly steep but you get what you pay for and there are many intriguing things to be found here.

One word for you my friend… Spices! Its not going to grab everyone by the genitals and spin them round and round until their lungs are empty of scream, but its definitely one for anyone out there who likes to dabble in the kitchen every once in a while. Tucked round the back is a nice facing full of fine herbs and spices that are ready to be chucked in the pot to give a meal that extra«mmmmm.!“ph it needs. Oh, and it also has everything else you’d expect of a convenience store, with an extra twist of something else, offering fresh veg and some intriguing varieties of fresh olives to indulge yourself with(taste buds allowing of course). Sadly the competitive pricing doesn’t stretch beyond the spices, so you won’t be doing your weekly shop there… But if your looking for some cupboard enhancers, hop off the bus on Lewes road and look no further! Word to the wise though: as with all spices, the rosemary is fantastically cheap, but may be a dash too chunky for most… Otherwise, crack on!

The Turkish Food Market is a lovely alternative to the corporate grocery shops near its Lewes Road location. Despite the small size, it offers a vast array of import foods from Eastern Europe and Asia. Beans and legumes, both canned and dried; as well as spices, sauces and sweets line the aisles. Near the front window, an impressive olive bar is set beside the baskets of fresh breads and rolls. Shopping at the Turkish Food Market is definitely a unique experience. Familiar brands are offered as well, in small supply, including breakfast cereals, biscuits and cans of pet food. Fruit and vegetables are delivered fresh daily, and fill shelves both inside the store and out onto the walkway, luring in passersby. Prices are quite reasonable, comparative to other small grocery and convenience stores, and the Turkish Food Mart is open until 11pm, seven days a week. I recommend checking it out to spice up your grocery experience; especially if you’re a vegetarian looking for new sources of protein. The vast selection of beans and lentils is almost overwhelming.

This place is quite simply a blessing to Lewes Rd. I stopped off here to pick up some ingredients for a dinner party recently and was soooo impressed! The fruit and veg is fresh, inexpensive and not just your run of the mill usuals… they had delicious blood oranges, watermelons and mangoes as well as some unusual vegetables. As with most ethnic supermarkets in Brighton, they sell a wide variety of foodstuffs, including many standard items such as pasta, tinned tomatoes etc(all Turkish bands of course). But they also do delicious Turkish specialities such as stuffed dolmades and aubergine in tins and fresh baklava and other yummy pastries. I can never manage to resist the baklava, its just too full of honey and nutty goodness… mmm! Check out the deli counter for a great selection of olives, stuffed peppers and artichokes and you’ll find feta, hummus and tabbouleh in the fridge. I wish that this place as my own personal larder. I really do. There’s nothing left to say… go and check it out for yourself!
