I required some stuff for the bedroom. The ‘stuff’ I required were: bed sheets, duvet covers, pillow cases. I also wanted some slippers because I don’t like placing my bare feet on the filthy tiles in my flat. I managed to find everything I required at The White Company. I managed to buy some quality bed sheets, duvet covers and pillow cases for a reasonable price. And even though pretty much everything in here is either white or beige, the items come in different patterns, so there’s at least a little bit of variety. I also managed to purchase some fuzzy slippers, which reminded me of the ones my mom used to wear. Yes, they’re a little feminine, but they keep my feet warm. And it’s not like anyone is going to see me wear them. Well, except my flatmate, but if he’s looking at my feet, then something is wrong with him.

The White Company is another one of those small versions of a department store. Items range from houseware to clothing and a few children’s items; all in elegant scared-to-touch kind of displays. Most of the clothing was bed-and-bath related: soft nightgowns and pyjamas, fuzzy bathrobes and slippers. Bathroom towels, cloths and mats seemed to be made for people who’d actually like their sleepwear to match the bathroom décor. Neat. Bedroom furnishings were also in this same style — sheets, duvet covers and even a bed frame — all in whites and beiges. I wasn’t very taken by the overall feel of the shop. A bit too stuffy for my liking.

Looking through the window of The White Company, everything seems, well, a little white! However, step inside this homely abyss and you’re confronted with oh look, more white. White, white, white products and freaky, Village of the Damned-esque mannequins! There are some nice items here, which, if I lived in an apartment bigger than a shoebox, I would quite like to buy. I am partial to the idea of a home that looks like a catalogue and all the white products do have a modern, clean and luxurious feel, but I somehow feel practically they might not work. I can’t get too excited about home furnishings because I’m not in the position to be buying them, but I can see why The White Company works — the items are stylish and the prices are reasonable. I just wish they’d jazz up those mannequins and make them look less, well, possessed!

The White Company reminds me of that sketch where comedy duo French & Saunders are sat on a white sofa in a white room. The walls are white, the floors white, the fireplace is white and yet, instead of feeling all zen and relaxed — they start screaming and shouting at each other. Five minutes in The White Company makes me feel exactly the same way. Of course it’s nice to have a couple or two of luxury white blankets, bed linen or even a cotton shirt and suit. But I’ve got to ask, who would want a whole apartment or house filled with white things? It’s all a bit Stepford Wives…
