Sneaks into 4-star territory, just. Nice old place, very Brighton — think plywood boxes and old beer kegs with cushions for chairs, all painted up. A strange if broad selection of beers(Dixie, from New Orleans, an Estonian beer, Asahi Dry, and a few others), and an eclectic café-y menu. Nice chips, not quite skinny but on the thinner side, seem to have been made from actual potatoes. Great burgers, held together not with a toothpick, but with a parasol. Slightly odd but workable burritos. Massive colourful salads… the list goes on. I’ve been assured their breakfast is, also, the business.

This place has always looked nice from the outside and I know it has a great back garden for summer However, went in this morning for the first time with a friend for croissant and coffee, and the croissant was like nothing I’ve ever seen before A little flat brown thing that looked like it could survive a nuclear war. Didn’t taste much better! Breakfast not recommended.

I’ve been there twice so far and have really liked it. I’ve enjoyed both the mochas and chicken wrap I’ve had there. The outside seating area has some tables that are covered(nice for when it’s raining) and others out in a pleasant outdoor garden-esque setting. I think it’s run by either a family or close-knit group of people, because I’ve seen the same staff each time I’ve gone in. Also, they have a reliable wifi connection, which has made it my new favorite café to bring my laptop to. I will definitely keep going back!

The meals aren’t huge so I wouldn’t recommend them as a lunch. However I sometimes go there for breakfast, and under those circumstances a medium-sized dish of pasta or chilli serves me nicely and the prices are fair too. The staff are as friendly as they come and they have an incredibly cosy outside area. This is a straightforward and no frills place to go for a drink or breakfast in a friendly and relaxed atmosphere. If you don’t expect a huge choice but simply a pleasant place to spend some time, you won’t be disappointed. A huge plus is that they are also very dog-friendly!

Well known in the Kemp Town area and its reputation is justified. Offers all the usual that you would expect from a café but has brilliant service and the choice of sitting inside or out the back which you wouldnt expect! Has a fun feeling about it which keeps taking me back for more. The prices are very competive as well and will satisfy your pocket as well as your tum!

I became a regular here, mainly because of the garden in the Summer, but also because if its a fry up I wanted this place always seemed the simplest and nicest on St. James Street. It’s a little sun trap and there is pretty much always a seat. If you want a quality breakfast, are a little hungover in need of fresh and friendly staff, this is your best bet in this area.

The sign on the door advertised free WI-Fi. I didn’t get free Wi-Fi, but I certainly got a quality breakfast. It’s a fairly busy place, with a very friendly and helpful staff. The Full English Breakfast is quite cheap and of superb quality. The sad part was my laptop’s inability to connect to their wireless network. The waitress was kind enough to assist me with a passkey, and assisted me further when I couldn’t get it to work(which I appreciated since it was a busy morning). With that, I just gave up and dug in to the food that was before me. Before leaving, I asked the waitress for a quality bookshop to purchase new releases. She couldn’t think of one off the top of her head, and she asked a customer behind her. And that customer directed me to the best one she could think of. Unfortunately, she mentioned street names, and rather than say, «I’m new here and I get lost easily. Could you please repeat that?» I just nodded and smiled. Quite the friendly place with a very pleasant atmosphere.

I must admit I thought this café was called 101 Street, on account of my inability to distinguish between addresses and names on signage. But no, it’s just called The Street. I went in for a cup of tea yesterday right when the sleet/rain deal started, and was instantly warmed by the 50s diner feel of the café(and the tea.) I was tempted(quite intensely — the plate was held right up to my face) by some apple cake with clotted cream for only a pound, but stuck with the tea.(I’m anticipating a wealth of Christmas sweets in the next few days.) The café offers sandwiches, soups, pastas and full breakfasts for quite low prices. The sandwiches started at £2.95, for instance. The quaint Specials board and chatty demeanour of the servers added to the diner feel. I also noticed an advertisement for a tarot card reader — she comes to The Street every Wednesday from 10am — 2pm. That might be interesting … She’s from the Psychic Network! Anyway, it’s a great little café for tea and cake or a diner-esque meal.

This café isn’t my favourite in the area, as it lacks a certain hustle and bustle(see Red Roaster for that). But the manager/owner is really friendly and the food well presented. My boyfriend was disappointed with only one sausage and one rasher of bacon on his fry up, but I on the other hand found it refreshing to eat a fry up prettily presented and not dripping in grease. The prices aren’t dirt cheap — you’re looking at 6 quid for a fry up, plus a steep charge for extra items — this place offers a more civilised brekkie(see Gossip Café for the cheap and cheerful). I must pop in there again soon actually as last year there were free Quality Street’s at the counter — always a welcome touch! I’m a fan of the tea too — okay there aren’t a bijillion varieties and there isn’t a tea leaf in sight, but it’s served in a massive mug, builder style, just how I have it at home! The décor is cosy, with a range of sofas/tables/garden seating, and it’s a nice place for a lazy sunday morning — all in all, well worth a visit(check out the specials too as there’re occasionally discounts on the breakfasts).

This is the best café in Kemptown, it has a cheap and cheerful menu, really friendly staff, on-street seating and a huge garden out the back with loads of seating amongst the shrubbery. Its great to have a proper coffee and catch some rays in the cute little garden area, The staff are really sweet and friendly and for the fit time in god know how long I was met with a smile from behind the counter as soon as i stepped in the building. Its a real hidden gem as having lived in Kemptown for 18months I have only jut sampled the Street’s delight. If you looking for a café in Kemptown this one comes highly recommended.
