The takeaway couldnt be more different from the previous review 2 years ago. Fresh tasty curries and plenty of extras due to the fierce completion from other indians on lewes road.

About 10 years ago this was probably the best Indian take away in Brighton — its not easy to say as I’m a Chef myself. And why not? The food was perfect everytime, fantastic friendly service, an open kitchen displaying a clean and efficient kitchen and most importantly of all — quality curries. Since the old staff had left and a couple change in ownerships later, this place has clearly lost what made it the Jewel of Lewis Road. The service is sloppy, no smiles as you enter, inefficient service and I haven’t even got to the greasy bland curries yet. The impression one gets from Empire these days is that if you offer rock-bottom prices it means good service… Very disappointed. If I could’ve given 0 starts then I would have.

After the best part of a lifetime gorging on curries it often becomes apparent, once the chilli-inspired euphoria has worn off, that curry-culture in the UK has become all a bit same-same. Usually catering for captive beer-and-bahjee audience, many have sacrificed their identity in favour of giving the philistines what they want. Empire Tandoori isn’t totally innocent here, but its ballsy, rough-and-ready dishes have enough rustic charm to see off most competition. The first open kitchen in Brighton, wait and watch the brigade of straight-of-the-boat cooks rustle up your food, and fast. As well as the usual favourites, such as the delicious jalfreezi, go cheap with the gorgeously buttery tarka daal with a keema naan for dipping.

I remember when the Empire opened and was very proud to proclaim that it had an open kitchen. Now, being midway down Lewis road(not the most exclusive of dining locations) I applaud this genius maneuver of marketing. I was in the catering trade when I last ordered from the takeaway and being a Lewis road resident, elected to work up my appetite by collecting my order. I was pleased to chef ‘whites’ that were pristine and all the FSA regulations being observed. If you were placing a telephone order, rest assured that your belly is in no danger of unwanted additions to your meal! The prices are standard curry rates and they threw in a complimentary papadum per main dish ordered. Always nice. I went for a pathia that was a good blend of heat and fruitiness, whilst my flatmates vindaloo seemed to hit the spot from the expression on his face. Definitely a worthy addition to your collection of take away menus in your kitchen draw.

I love curry more than my little(currently curry starved) brain can articulate, for this reason, I must recommend Empire Tandoori, aka the curry kings. I only went here because it was conveniently located 5 yards away from my house, but having eaten there, I’d definitely walk at least another 5 yards if I had to. The menu isn’t anything extraordinary; everything you’d expect in terms of rogan josh, kurma, passanda, tikka etc. But in terms of taste, Empire really steps it up a gear. Lewes Road is a bit skanky, and therefore unsurprisingly, the Lewes Road take aways are frequently equally poor, not Empire Tandoori though. The food tasted fresh and vibrant, it has truly been spot on every time of asking.
