Just got my sons first bike from here. The service was really good and my son is delighted(got him one of those push along scoot bikes) Am now planning on buying a bike for myself from them using the cycle to work scheme.

I went into Sydney Street bikes to buy a bike and was very surprised to see much product they managed to fit into such a small place. It’s like an Aladdin’s cave for bike bits and suits the quirky laines feel which instantly put me at ease. The staff were very friendly and very willing to pass on their knowledge and experiences. The information given was very useful and I never felt pressured to buy anything. I ended out buying a sorta town bike and have been very pleased with it ever since. The after service is also very good as they offer a free 1st service after 6 weeks. Overall I felt the service was very good(certainly better than a lot of the bike shops I’ve been to) and would highly recommend them.

I agree with Hartingale — the attitude in this shop can be terrible. There is something quite sweet about a bike shop which is so overcrowded with stock that everyone has to walk in in single file but no more than two people can stand at the cash register without being knocked by the mechanic. If you want a more pleasant experience you’re better of going to the bigger name store off Queen’s Road. If you catch them on a good day they can be helpful and chatty but the older guy in there never smiles! I brought my son’s bike in for its’ free post sale service and he initially refused to do it because he said they hadn’t sold me the bike. even when I showed him the receipt he still treated me like a criminal. If I want that kind of attitude I’ll stay at home and speak to the wife! I wouldn’t go back and wouldn’t recommend.

I went into Sydney Street Bikes a little while ago when I was thinking about getting a new bike. In the end I just got my old crappy bike fixed because I didn’t want to lay out loads of money, but had I actually followed through I would almost certainly have got it from here. They have a wide range on bikes, and the guy who talked to me was really friendly, really helpful, and not at all pushy or hard sell. He was very willing to let me have a go on the bikes, and wasn’t impatient with my ignoramus questions. When I was in there they also let a guy borrow some tools to change a tyre. Overall seems like a very friendly outfit, and the guys know what they are talking about, unlike in many big chain stores like Halfords where you have school age kids who don’t know much about the bikes working at the weekends just to get a bit of money.

My sister bought a bike from this place. One of the old looking, retro things with massive handlebars and a huge saddle. They aren’t cheap by any means but you know your going to look pretty cool gliding down the seafront on one of these as opposed to a BMX! They have a massive selection of bikes outside during the summer months and its good fun just to have a browse around. The owner is so friendly and gets really excited when anyone shows an interest in his bikes which is good to see. I’m pretty sure you can try and barter the guy down on your dream machine too!

Sydney Street Bikes is a pleasant blend of all the advantages of a large chain store i.e. a great selection of stock and brands, and all the benefits of a smaller independent. As you enter the store the staff is immediately there to welcome you in and make you feel at comfortable. Unlike many independent bike shops the guys here are ready to share their knowledge of cycles with the non-enthusiast without that off-putting air of contempt for those new to the sport or who have no deeper interest in it than a quick and cheap way to get a little exercise and get to work. The selection of brands here is good too, whereas Specialized seem to have become the easy way to make money for smaller stores Sydney Street are incorporating such fresher European brands as Lapier. The workshop here is open as well so not only can you book your bike in for repair but the mysteries of the cycle workshop can be unveiled to you.

Not good — expensive I’m afraid and not great service — I’ve been there a few times and I normally feel guilty for not buying a £1000 bike and being retro cool in that kind of bike shop way… a little bit more customer service wouldn’t go amiss… sorry… there are better shops in town…

I am not a bike obsessive– there are some pretty active forums, I know– but ever since my friend rode up on a new vintage style black Pashley ‘Princess Sovereign’. I have never seen such a beautiful bike! I hadn’t even considered bike lust before that moment… thanks Sidney St bikes! Now I have another item to put on my wish list! So, as you will have guessed the Pashley came from Sidney St bikes and ever since I have to go into Sydney St every so often to gaze at the amazing bikes they have in there. The Pashley’s are top-range but they do have cheaper good quality town bikes as well as mountain bikes. It’s a lovely shop with a wide range and they can give you great advice.
