There isn’t really a massive BME community in Brighton that I know of after living here for 8 years, but there is enough to warrant needing a decent Afro Hairdressers in the city. It’s really important that if you have afro caribbean/mixed hair like me, that it is cut and treated properly. I had a few mishaps at various chain hairdressers in Brighton that just didn’t know how to cut my hair. I ended up going for a trim in one place and the hairdresser inadvertedly cut far too of my hair off. This is what happens when you don’t go to a hairdresser that specialises in Afro hair, it has to be cut, washed, different kinds of products have to be used on it to European hair. You can imagine my delight when I finally went to Shae Shae’s. It was opened by a lovely couple around 8 years ago, after upon moving to Brighton, they realised there was nowhere that specialised in Afro hair. Shae Shae’s have really done a lot for the BME community in Brighton, getting involved and promoting projects and playing a big part in Brighton and Hove Black History Month. They are always always busy on a saturday, you can walk past at any given time and it is full of young lads waiting for a hair cut. I would give them five stars, but I have been there on more than one occasion where i have turned up at my appointment time and have not been seen for at least an hour! It’s become a bit of a running joke between my boyfriend and I. I go in there for a trim, and every so often I go there to have a few cornrows(braids) put in my hair as I don’t know how to do it myself and I like the style. The hairdresser only charges me a fiver for it! Cut, wash and blowdry is £10 which is just fantastic in my opinion. I will be going there for boxbraids soon which will cost £80 — again fantastic price, I have seen another hairdresser in the city advertising the same for over £200 which is just extortionate.
