Dean T has jogged my memory and also guilt tripped me into showing some love and revealing my unhealthy relationship with deep fat fryers and all things pickled. Drool. I’ve actually been coming here since I was a kid and although it’s been taken over plenty of times, it’s always been a safe, stodgy bet. Fluffy, chunky, flavourful chips, flaky fish in a decent batter, my favourite type of pickled onions — the whopping great big white ones and an array of fattening options, i.e. Battered/non battered sausages, saveloys, chicken nuggets, burgers, etc… The mushy peas are nice. If my son comes in with me they usually give him a mini bag of chips while we wait. You can’t really go wrong. Although I have one tip — put the salt and vinegar on at home because they’ll keep hot and won’t go soggy.

It’s about time someone gave some love to Sea Breeze. I feel like a bit of a snake, as i’ve been coming here for a while and haven’t got round to telling the world how nice it is. I live closer to the Cod Father, but wouldn’t eat Fish and Chips from there if you bought it for me. The fish here is always nice and fresh, the batter is light and crispy, not greasy and oily. Chips are thick and very generous in their portion size. Brighton’s a funny place regarding Fish and Chips as i’ve never really been blown away by any, but the good people of Sea Breeze are doing there best to change that.

I have been here twice. First time was really good fresh and crispy fish and chips and very reasonably priced. When I went the second time it was a completely different story. I had chips that were very old and dry the point where the outside was crunchy. The fish, even though freshly fried, was soggy and watery inside. Because of my last experience, I think I am going to have to look for fish and chips elsewhere.

This place looks to all intents and purposes like a greasy dive, somewhere for chips but not a lot else. Surprisingly though, the fish and chips are very good. The large cod is a hulking piece of fish, and feels like it’s as the size of a whole salmon, and is covered in airy batter, which is crispy and oily. The chip portions are vast too, and they’re the traditional thick and floury type. Not exactly bustling with trade whenever I’ve been in, the fish is cooked to order, rather than sitting in the warming tray and drying out — and is all the better for it. The fry-man is laid back and friendly, and The Sun is usually lying around for some trashy entertainment while you wait.

A Fish and Chip shop open 7 days a week? Convenient or alarming? I’ll let you decide. I was pretty sure Fish and Chip shops were closed on Mondays for a reason… no fresh fish?! Whilst you won’t find me ordering haddock and chips in here on a Monday, I have grabbed dinner here a few times, and it wasn’t bad at all. The batter wasn’t quite as crispy as I like it, but they do good chips and aren’t afraid to slather on the vinegar, which is a-okay by me. The fish cakes are also yummy. I wouldn’t touch the battered sausages with a barge pole, but that’s just personal taste… they just look soooo greasy! What’s dangerous about this place is it’s location. If you happen to live at the top of Hanover and walk up Southover St on your way home, chances are by the time you make your way half way up, you’ll be hungry. And there you’ll find Sea Breeze, conveniently awaiting you’re arrival. You could end up eating fish and chips all too often! If you can be bothered with the extra few minutes walk, I think Cod Father on Islingword Rd is marginally better(crispier batter), but there’s not much in it…
