Love this tiny Polish-Lithuanian-maybe-Latvian shop. There is some Polish stuff, which is not too relevant for me, but you can also find some Lithuanian production. Obviously, it’s a tiny shop, but possibly the best place in Brighton to get some Eastern European essentials, such as buckwheat, kefir, dumplings, pickled beetroot, black bread, and even dried wild mushrooms. This is your only hope. Surprisingly, I find there almost everything I need in such a tiny place. If you’re about to cook something Eastern European, or you want to surprise your Polish friend, or just try once something simple. but new(e.g. Lithuanian beer! or vodka), you can get some useful stuff here. Normally, there is not much stuff for Brits except for eggs. :D

Magdusia is a little Polish convenience store in 7 Dials, which sells a wide range of Polish and non Polish goods. I live just a few minutes walk away, so often pop in here for basics such as milk, but am always enthralled with the more unusual goods on offer. They sell all the standard items you would expect from a local convenience store — basic foodstuffs, confectionary, crisps, alcohol, tobacco. They don’t necessarily stock standard brands though — for example, crisps are mostly Lays or other foreign brands in unusual flavouors, alongside mars bars they sell all manner of unusual chocolates with unpronounceable names, next to the Strongbow and Fosters is Polish lager and fruit flavoured ciders. There are also a few very strange looking items lurking in the fridge — lurid coloured fruit dumplings and bright pink sausages. Staff are always friendly and welcoming too, making this a nice alternative to the co-op.

This shop in the Seven Dials area of Brighton(and a short but steep walk from Preston Circus) claims to be the largest Polish shop in Brighton. It’s not actually very large, but then I don’t know what the competition is like. I went in here for the first time the other evening, having seen the beer offer to which george123 refers. They certainly have a wide range of different types of Polish beers,(mostly lagers in style) some of which are quite interesting and well worth a try. The rest of the shop concentrates on Polish groceries but they also sell a range of magazines and newspapers as well. It’s fascinating to see the range of specifically Polish items(mostly food) which are available. The selection might indicate that most Poles have a sweet tooth, or perhaps that’s just what the market demands when people are feeling a little homesick? Staff are very friendly and chatty, and happy to help if you are not familiar with what’s on offer.

My friend kept onto me about trying the special offer of 4 beers for £5. So I just had to go and taste these beers. They are Polish and very moreish. The shop sells lots of Polish groceries. The staff are friendly and want to talk. Its not nicely presented but its the produce that counts. This shop is worth a browse, if only to be confused by what certain Polish goods are!
