Since I’m not too keen on pop music, Heart radio, and all those songs you hear in shops, gyms and supermarkets, I try to avoid clubs(particularly seafront ones) as much as possible. However, Green Door Store(GDS)is one of the rare exceptions. It’s NOT one of those places where folks mainly go to dance, get wasted or look for one night stands. Well, it’s not puritanic, but the number people being sick, spilling drinks on your clothes or just harassing you is significantly lower than in any other club. It gets pretty busy and packed by students during the term time, but different kind of folks is also present there, which means GDS is not only for teens and those in their early 20s. In terms of music, GDS tends to invite DJs and artists for some rather alternative music; the genres range from hip-hop to experimental electronic, like chill wave, witch house, etc(I’m afraid, I’m not a huge specialist in modern music, so I cant describe it more). You might hear something familiar(like pop), something from the past(Joy Division), something new(Lapalux), and something live(Susan Sundfor). Live gigs are probably most valuable what GDS can offer. Most of gigs are charged, and start at 7pm, but dance-nights are free, and open from 11pm till around 3am(on website it says 4am, but it’s never true — they close down as soon as it’s less of crowds). There are different events for each day of the week, so it’s worth checking their facebook page for more information on what’s on. Some nights might be really quiet, when you just sit in the corner, sipping your beer, but some get so crowded, you have to wait ages in the que. It depends. Well, I don’t attend GDS anytime, but I pretty much always find something, what would suit my alternative taste.

The Green Door Store is a fab music venue, in my opinion! The space is wonderful — a bit dingy, in this old cobbled building, but fab nonetheless! It looks trendy, rather than run-down, with a rustic(rather than ruined) vibe. The bar is usually rammed, but which good club doesn’t have a rammed bar, right? The range of music that’s performed here is great! They constantly have great acts lined up and host a good variety of older and newer bands. You get the feeling that people come here for the music and not, like other reviewers have highlighted, just for a pull, a pint or a puke! It’s a club, yes, but there seems to be a slightly different atmosphere here to some of the other clubs around town. The gigs are tickets and they charge you for entry, but they also just do general dance nights where you can come in for free, which is always good! The location is a little bit odd… It’s very ‘terrifying, abandoned building’ and so if you don’t know where you’re going you might be tempted not to venture down it’s way. That being said, it’s well lit and there are always people milling around outside the place when it’s open so, in that respect, it’s a-okay! If you like to dance, listen to good music or simply hang out in a buzzing venue, try this place out! It might just be your new favourite place!

Good place to come for a late drink, i like the fact that its a bit industrial looking and slightly grimy, reminds me of clubs in London from many moons ago. Music is ever changing here, but last night it was the Brighton institution that is Russ Dewbury, i think he plays here once a month as does Rob Louis. Good crowd of unpretentious types, which can be rare in Brighton, filling the small dance floor and in the large bar area. And its free most nights !!

I joined a few friends for a couple of drinks at this bar last Saturday. I only managed to have 1 drink when my evening was cut short. After ordering and paying in full for 2 drinks(our second round in total) the barman(a very tall brown haired fellow) served me 1. On asking where my second drink was, he insisted that he gave me 2, although there was clearly 1 in front of me. I hadn’t left the bar at all during that time. Less than 5 minutes had passed. I asked to speak to the manager. The barman refused. I insisted. I was ejected. Shameful!!! An awful customer experience to say the very least. I would not recommend this bar to anyone, ever.

As always I’ll start with the bouncers, I had some difficulty at the door because of the length of my trouser legs(this is on my preferred Tuesday night drink). A tall Scandinavian looking fellow told me that they would be hazardous and said that my hair was too ‘old looking’. I don’t know what this means as I’m 20 years old and compared to other hairs my hair has only been around for as long as I have. I’ve been around for about 20 years I think. So you can see my point. Anyway, when the bouncer let me in, I could have sworn he looked at me AND my body. This made me uncomfortable. It was the same way in which my father looked at me(who was a great man). From the décor it felt as if I’d walked into to a ‘David Lynch’. I was perturbed by the fact a railway company would offer such a service, trains being the main source of income. Not selling trains but paying for journeys across England, however I’m sure there are companies that do produce trains otherwise I’m not certain of the source. I’m almost 100% positive they are not natural but they could have been excavated from eons ago. I was relieved and pleasantly surprised when I ordered a sparkling water and it included the perfect quantity of ice, one piece, any more and my teeth feel the burn.(Get it? Burn! Ice!). On a serious note my dentist recommended Sensodyne toothpaste and it has made a difference so no qualms there. I was satisfied by the reception I had on my phone, I wasn’t in need of contact but I regularly checked and had full signal. Again, as in many other Brighton venues I found that the quality of human beings was lacking. One woman at the bar I was ordering my drink from asked me ‘how I was doing’ and when I replied(explaining that I had a good day and had done a food shop amongst other things, but had a problem dealing with the death of my father) she didn’t really have an opinion, and the conversation ended in an awkward silence. Which was not remotely pleasant. In addition I was standing near the dancing floor enjoying my drink when three women asked me to dance(I believe they were friends) I politely declined, they then asked again, and assuming they hadn’t heard me(it was loud) I again deferred and to my shock they said ‘come on’(which translates to dance) so I said ‘No, I do not dance!’ and they told me to ‘live a little’. This experience wasn’t nice, so I went to the closest bouncer(another woman…) and asked them to mediate between the two parties but when we arrived back at the spot we had been in they had gone! Very rude but that is what you get with young people. All in all a very good disco party. I apologize I’ve lost my train of thought and require a taxi immediately to Selfridges. To admire the architecture(the one in Cheltenham). Reg, Monty. pps. I wish to make a formal complain about the bouncer and the young ladies.

At the end of the day it’s a venue. thats all it needs to be and thats all it is. I like the old skool twist of the antler wall hangings and the underground brewery feel but its not a place for the usual quiet drink. Went to see a friend launch his music video and it was perfect for the task.

Under the railway station. Late night venue. It’s warehouse like and has a real underground feel with no big sign outside and vast space inside. Full of antique industrial stuff. I love this place. I felt like I should be able to smoke inside as I was in 30s Wiemar Berlin!
