We all do it. We try and deny it but, after a heavy night out, nothing really satisfies like a good, greasy kebab. Brighton is full of places that I wouldn’t want to be seen dead in in the cold light of day, and yet can be found in in the wee hours of the morning, but Golden Grill is a place I’d be proud to order a kebab from. One of the cleanest nicest kebab shops in town, Golden Grill is the kind of place I’d go out of my way to, if I desperately needed that kind of night-time snack. As kebab shops go, Golden Grill is a huge step up from the typical, kebab-shop norm that Brighton is full of. There is a genuine sense of cleanliness and atmosphere: amazing, I know. On top of that, the food itself, while still a kebab and a culinary mile off real quality, is actually made remarkably well. Instead of the rubbish bread you so often get fobbed off with, Golden Grill wraps their kebab meat in a proper flatbread. The salad is fresh(amazing, I know!), the meat looks less greasy and awful than it does at most of these places… It almost feels like an alternate reality. Adding to this, they wrap the kebab in greaseproof paper properly: no plastic, styrofoam-y box things here. Is this a kebab shop that cares about presentation? If you’re in need of a kebab, for whatever reason(no judging here), this is the place to go. Now, I’m not suggesting you go here for dinner or anything like that: this isn’t a restaurant or the like. It’s just a kebab shop that actually cares about what they’re serving you. If it’s that time of the night, drunkenly wander as far as you need to get here: your stomach will thank you in the morning!

At the suggestion of one of my co-workers, I decided to go to Golden Grill to try one of their kebabs. It was a very good suggestion. The kebab I received was delicious, and overflowing(in a good way) with salad, onions, garlic sauce and chilli. The staff member at the time of my visit was completely focused on making my kebab, and the only bit of conversation we had was when he asked: «Sauces?» I replied: «All of ‘em.» He nodded, wrapped up up my kebab and I dug right in. There are other kebab places in town that charge a bit more than they do here, and the kebabs they serve don’t have the same flavor as they do here.

If I was going to get a doner kebab I would probably go out of my way to go to this place as it is one of the cleanest kebab places I have seen and the food is pretty good there. I also knew someone who worked here and he ate there every night so that has to say either he would eat a scabby donkey(which I wouldn’t put past him) or the food standards are good. There are many other golden grills which I think must be connected some how but I am not sure how. Still I have been to all three in the Hove area as I am a bit of a fatty on occasion and they all seem to have the same good standards. They charge about the same as most other cheap and horrible kebab shops so it is worth going out of your way a bit.

Nice food and usually a friendly service. There is a good range of the usual burgers, kebabs and pizzas. Always check your change though as they don’t always stick to the price list.
