I would say this is a standard breakfast/lunch venue with reasonable prices and reasonable quality, where nothing stands out or is particularly interesting to note. It is very roomy inside which makes it unusually better suited to large groups compared to other similar cafes nearby, and doesn’t fog up too much in the winter which I always appreciate. But as I’ve mentioned in my reviews of other restaurants in the area, I’d rather head down the road a bit to Central Brighton where the café offerings are a bit better and more exciting for the same price.

This little café was just over the road from where I used to live. I was gutted that it only opened up towards the end of my tenancy there, because a decent café was exactly what was lacking within close walking distance of my house. The proprietor was lovely, and had an amazing knack for remembering the things I had told him last time I was in. They do a decent English breakfast, sandwiches, as well as a few hot dishes at lunch time. Its not as cool and trendy as some of the cafés in the centre of town, but it does provide a service that was sorely lacking before its arrival. My male housemates fell in love with the buff waitress that worked there too.

The best thing about this Lewes Road café has to be its bright, airy main room, which on a sunny day makes for some contended scoffing. Bistro might be pushing it a little — we’re looking at a fairly typical café menu of breakfasts, baguettes and burgers, but it’s reasonable for what it is. Cooking up front is the ever-grinning proprietor, and there’s usually a copy of the Sun handy while you wait. I’ve had better coffees but at least it’s the real stuff, unlike some greasy spoons. Clean, stylish and welcoming, come here for the freshly cooked breakfast, but avoid the dark downstairs seating area, which lacks the atmosphere of the front.

A very handsomely decorated café living on Lewes Road about half way between the BP garage and Natwest. The selection of food is certainly decent enough to satisfy any café goer and then some. A little tip of mine would be(if you’re grabbing a tasty sandwich) pay the extra to get a baguette, as the 45p it costs will get you a much nicer chunk of bread. Its surprisingly spacious inside, with plenty of room for you to tuck yourself away in a corner for a quiet read, or to accommodate your group of buddies, so either way you’ll be happy. The staff are happy and friendly, and when I opened my wallet to see I had about 40p on me, they were happy to prepare my food while I popped off to grab a note from the cash machine. Plus, you’re bound to like a place if you get mis-recognised as a celebrity off the Telle. Apparently I look like some chappy on «so you think you can dance».

Just on Lewes Road, this is a small little café that offers all you need for a light breakfast or an afternoon snack. If you’re on the move, they can provide all sorts of sandwiches or burgers to go. Alternatively sit in and take a load off in the nice warmth of the backroom seating area that comes fully equip with comfort and culture. It’s never overly busy in there either which adds to the calm ambience that can be enjoyed. All food is quite lovely, freshly made and nothing will cost you more than a fiver. Comes with friendly staff and a large choice of fillings and flavours. A nice place to get away, have a brew and take a deep breath.

The Galleria Coffee Bistro is one of my favourite places to enjoy a coffee that’s close to campus without being actually on campus. The change of scenery is quite nice, especially with the oncoming term paper season. The café is less than fifteen minutes away from the university via bus, the stop just past Sainsbury’s. It has nice feel, with most of the seating in a backroom — just down a short set of stairs. The tables are surrounded by a cushioned bench along the walls, complete with decorative and cozy-looking pillows. I usually stick with my staple Americano for £1.50, although the Galleria offers a variety of hot and cold drinks, all made and served by friendly staff. The food menu includes full breakfasts, sandwiches, burgers and jacket potatoes, ranging in prices from £2.00 — £5.00. The meals are cooked behind the counter and fill the café with the delicious smells of home cooking. I recommend this quaint café when you’re in the mood for a coffee and study session set amidst the eclectic mix of American pop-culture artwork and Italian music.
