To be fair it’s golf, but I’m not sure I could call this crazy — slightly eccentric at best. If you’ve ever watched Happy Gilmore, there is a scene in it with a true crazy golf course, epic holes with earthquakes, clowns and windmills. In Brighton you get concrete. Lots of concrete. Hit a ball over a concrete speed bump into a hole. Hit a ball around a concrete corner into a hole. Hit a ball into… well you get the idea. The concept alone and children’s pester power will make this place do enough business in the summer. there are hardly any green keeping overheads after all. Personally, I would prefer to skim stones into the sea. That is both more challenging and exciting than this offering to the city.

Whilst it’s probably two thirds of the size of Peter Pan’s Adventure Golf, Crazy Golf draws bigger crowds because of it’s close proximity to the Palace Pier and nearby facilities. At £2 a round, it’s cheap enough but it’s really not very crazy or exciting after ten or fifteen minutes. There’s no challenging obstacles or unusual décor, just grey concrete, green felt and child-friendly ball holes. My biggest grumble however, is there’s a fish and chips stand diagonally opposite Crazy Gold and the smell of cooking oil often seems to follow you around the course. If the food looked and smelt good this might be an advantage but unfortunately, it doesn’t!

Crazy golf never really lives up to the idea of itself, but if your willing to accept this fact then it can kind of be quite fun. So, now we have accepted this, lets just pick up those cheap putters, and those weird heavy balls, turn that frown upside down and smack some balls about aimlessly, whilst we ride our luck as much as possible. The location makes it a great place to come for tourists or loved one’s you want to show a silly time.

This crazy golf is fine if you want to waste some time whilst on the beach and do not want to spend the fortunes that you will if you go on the pier. However, I find it hard to enjoy when the ball keeps hitting divets and getting stuck right against the wall. I got beaten by my girlfriend which was funny as I didn’t live it down for the rest of the day so if you want a crazy golf that levels the playing field this is the one. On a sunny day this is the perfect sort of limited exercise to get any child of the sofa and into the sunshine whilst not costing you a fortune. With many different challenges it doesn’t get boring until atleast halfway through.

This crazy golf isn’t really very crazy, but it’s conveniently situated right near the pier and is always something fun to do if your hanging out on the beach for an afternoon! I think it’s £2 for 18 holes which isn’t bad, and the guy was so happy when I went to use the place off season — they don’t open if it’s not busy, but I think they really struggle whatever if it’s not mid-summer. Hole wise, nothing is too hard or elaborate. Though, as always, beware of crazy golf if you’re the competitive type — my friend was annoyed that I was winning(and gloating) the whole way round, until she turned it round and got three hole-in-ones on the last three holes — gggrrrr!

The British seaside experience just wouldn’t be the same without a round of Crazy Golf. I recall many such rounds when I was a child, on holidays to various south coast destinations around the UK, and I’ve even played it in Gran Canaria! Brighton has two crazy golf courses on its sea-front, one by the Pier and one at Peter Pan’s world a kilometre or so further east, towards the Marina(adjacent to Half-way station on Volk’s Railway). This is the one nearer the town, by the Pier. It’s not as large or elaborate as the Peter Pan one, but it’s more conveniently located. It’s £2 for a round of 18 holes, and there’s a fish-and-chip stall next door to replenish your strength after your exertions
