Very good, knowledgeable and helpful shop manager/owner and a great range of wool with good reductions and value options. Nice and peaceful in there too amongst the bustle of George St

A really good knitting shop based in Hove. Though they seem to stock more of the pricier yarns, they do have a brilliant selection available and have a website to buy things from as well. It’s difficult to leave with nothing in hand!

Cocoon also runs knitting and crochet workshops for all ability levels. I went along to the beginners knitting class — £15 for 2hr15m(bargain) and it was really useful. I have had a little bit of help and advise from a few friends so can just about manage the basics, this put me a little ahead of many of the others but it was still useful. Anne, the instructor, taught us how to cast on, knit and pearl, all the components to be able to do garter, stocking and cable stitch, and also how to cast off at the end. Anne was a pretty good teacher but was a little impatient with those who were struggling and had a tendency to scream if she thought you were about to do something wrong! Tea and coffee were provided, plus a plate of biscuits(this won me over straight away!). Plus, you were given 10% off in the shop after your class. Would recommend this class for any aspiring knitters out there.

I tried to knit a scarf once — I suppose I did actually do it, except for the cast-on, cast-off bit, though it wasn’t quite wearable. So, Cocoon’s catch phrase: ‘Everything you need to create beautiful knitwear’ is one I don’t necessarily agree with. There’s a bit of skill involved, that unfortunately, you can’t buy … or can you? They do offer a knitting class! Anyway, all the tools are definitely available at Cocoon: yarns in every colour — some fuzzy, some thin — needles in a variety of sizes(and shapes), and patterns for easy stuff to really complicated projects. The sales clerks all know what they’re talking about, too, so they can recommend something based on your skill level. The shop also has a selection of jewellery and ‘habdashery’ so it’s quite interesting to browse around. Eventually, I’d like to be able to make mittens, but I should probably perfect the scarf before I move on.

Located on George Street in Hove, Cocoon is one of the best places for any local needle demon to get supplies, accessories and tips. Having visited recently I was pleasantly surprised by the level of advice and service the staff provided. As a new knitter my girlfriend had a few questions, all of which were answered adeptly with various cost-effective solutions provided. Everything you could need for knitting, sewing, stitching and alike is available and if you’re unsure about something the friendly staff will be more than happy to help. Even various pre-made fluffy toys are on offer for those wishing to buy a cute present for a child or loved one. All products are fairly cheap and the atmosphere is very welcoming. A good bet for any needle related need.

Stitchin’ and bitchin’ might not be as big in the UK as it is in the U.S. but there’s definitely been a resurgence of interest in people knitting of late. This cute yarn store on Hove’s bustling George Street opened last year and has a big tree outside that they hang hand-knitted oranges on when the weather is good enough. I’ve heard some hardcore knitters complaining that they stock too many acrylics but as a non-knitter, I was pleasantly surprised by the variety of different coloured yarns, ribbons, buttons, needles and haberdashery items. They also have one-off knitted jackets and tops by the owner and other local designers. Run by a friendly couple, Cocoon also offers regular knitting classes, workshops and what they politely call Knit and Natter sessions.
