Every Saturdays, from 7 am to 5pm, on Upper Gardner Street there is a lot of independent stalls that sell everything from secondhand books, antiques, records, clothes to street food and vegetables. Every time I go there I usually manage to find and buy a vintage cookery book. I have now four cookery books, they were published between 1911 and 1970. On Upper Gardner Street there is also a very big two storey antique shops which I really like: North Laine Antique & Fleamarket, it is the perfect place to find old fashioned plates and cups of tea for example.

I was using my Unilocal app to find a vintage shop called«To be worn again» when to my delightful surprise we stumbled upon this market. This market has been running over 90 years and sells: Antiques, jewellery, art, furniture, bric-à-brac, electrical goods, vintage, retro, fashion clothing & accessories, Jeans, books, records, CDs, Tools, Organic fruit & veg, Plants & Herbs, Pop Cycle Collectables, Brighton Photography, organic & handmade soup and loads more stuff. I bought some cool sunnies that had this flower patterns on the handles, now that’s unique. The sunnies sold for £8 and two for £15 it was okay, Ive seen cheaper on Brick Lane. I also saw MAC makeup for a fiver… HELLO! that makeup ain’t cheap, its about £10-£20 so yeah that’s a bargain. Also I saw one stall selling cheap and quirky England souvenirs. This market is set in North lane and is a popular area to visit if you are taking a day trip to Brighton with the purpose of shopping to buy vintage or to get something unique. This area has a lot independent/unique shops with pubs and cafes. When I’m in Brighton again, this is a must stop for me, and oh yeah! I did find that shop«To be worn again» is was not far from the market.

In action on Saturdays from 9am till 5pm, this little street market is one of the better markets in Brighton centre. Located on upper Gardener Street it’s out of the hustle and bustle of the main north laines. With various contrasting stalls from 80s electronic equipment to second hand books there’s a real variety of products on offer. Being a street market it’s cash only so bring a wad and you’re sure to find some small treasure. Chances are it won’t cost too much either.

This is a great little market for pretty much everything. I’ve come here for things as disparate as jeans and cutlery. Some is new, some second hand, some stall holders are professional, some just clearing out junk. There’s usually a great record stall, and the second hand books are a favourite visit. There’s food as well, with organic vegetables vying for space with delicious homemade pastries and on one or two occasions, homemade lemonade. I’ve grown wary of most events and places in the Lanes because they often seem rather self — aware, as though café-owners are playing the part of café-owners, and the kids on the street have all checked in advance to see what one another is wearing so they don’t clash. This, perhaps due to being a bit out of the main thoroughfare, is less pretentious than many similar things — it’s not pretending to be a rustic street market, it’s just a street market, and not too much of an overpriced one at that. Having said that, due to its location it’s more expensive than the car boot, but it is within easy reach of central Brightonians. I often go away without having bought anything, but it’s a great atmosphere for browsers and more fun than window shopping in the usual style.

The best thing about this market is it has such a variety of stalls, which makes it much more fun to walk around than if it was just fashion or organic vegetables. This street really does come alive every Saturday with sellers and prospective buyers. I sometimes wonder how these people have the energy to move larger items like bookcases and tables from place to place, especially first thing in the morning. You’ve got to have a passion for it is all I can say. Personally I’m a fan of perusing the vintage jewellery, the second hand books and records, the retro clothes stalls and the cakes!

Held on Upper Gardner Street in the North Laines, Brighton Street Market is a bustling Saturday market with dozens of stalls selling everything from cupcakes and organic salad and veggies to secondhand books, CDs, records, lamps, antiques and clothes. There’s a stall that seems to sell nothing but original Levi’s and another that sells unique and one-off pieces of jewellery including cute necklaces made from buttons. I’ve picked up alsorts of bits and pieces here over the last few years from two anglepoise lamps to old vinyl. My only regret is I didn’t buy the swimming pool ashtray when I saw it. At £22 it was over-priced but so David Hockney it hurt. Goes without saying, the whole market is cash only so take plenty of pounds and pennies with you and don’t forget to haggle!
