All I can really say is that this place is incredibly small — two rooms small. However, the items on display are all worth stopping in to see. Worth a trip if you are relaxing on the Brighton shore, but don’t make an extensive trek to see the fishing museum. And its free!

The museum is a tribute to Brighton before the Edwardians. Back when it was known as Brighthelmston(hove was a separate hamlet), the local population mainly worked through the fishing industry. The museum is two rooms and the majority of it is filled by a 27ft fishing boat! Aside from that, expect your assortment of fishing paraphernalia, examples of knots, nets and some nice aquatic inspired artwork. It helps that the museum is set in the King’s Road arches, where much of the original fishnig crrews operated from before the main industry moved on to Shoreham. If you are on the beach then this is a nice break from the pebbles and children will have fun checking out what is on display. If you are passing early in the day you can also take advantage of picking up some fish for your dinner, as some of the daily catch from Shoreham gets sent to the museum for sale. Since the waters around Brighton got cleaned up, I see no reason to get your fish from here over frozen and thawed cuts from a supermarket. A nice little slice of Brighton’s history if you want to see one aspect of how the city has grown and changed over the last 200 years.

The fishing museum is part museum, part art gallery and part fish shop. I get my mackerel from here and its gorgeously fresh and cheap. They will de-bone and gut it for you, I mostly just go for a gutting as I cant stand fiddling around with bloody bits. If you choose to de-bone, cut the fish down the middle underneath, turn it over skin up and press down all over its back(you will hear the bones crunching) then turn it over and pick em out. It took me about 2 hours, I recommend getting them to do it. The gallery here hosts a range of local artists and once a year they have the Mackerel festival which involves an exhibition of fish related art and a priest who comes down to say a few words. Lovely event.

The Brighton Fishing Museum, tucked away under the arches and between the two piers is a lovely little tribute to the history of fishing in the area. The museum is essentially two rooms, which have been tastefully jam packed full of original painting’s, pictures and artifacts, telling the story of fishing in Brighton… oh yeh and they’ve also got a full sized, 27 foot Clinker built punt boat. The location, the idiosyncrasy, the freeness and the complete quaintness of this place makes it a must see if your taking a stroll along the seafront. If only the rest of the world was like Brighton Fishing Museum!!!
