We love coming to this Bijou Coffee/tea shop at the Top of Norfolk Square .Its right next to the bus stop and is incredibly popular with the very attractive students from the Olivet Language School opposite… and these Italians and French really DO know a great coffee !! We have a breakfast roll which in its egg and bacon guise has to score 11⁄10 !! The proprietor/chef/patron is Paul and really makes the place the friendly and welcoming establishment that it is !! There are outside tables and chairs but not much cover if it rains… but honestly… who cares… it’s a True Brighton Belle !!!

If good things come in small packages then that is certainly the case with Banjo’s sandwich bar. Situated at the top end(Western Road) of Norfolk Square. This tiny sandwich bar not only serves up sandwiches using reasonably good quality ingredients filled to the brim but also very reasonable priced. An example is the full breakfast roll at £2.50. With outside seating, on a warm summer’s day you can sit and enjoy your food whilst experiencing both the tranquillity of Norfolk Square and at the same time the hustle and bustle of Western Road. If you are into people watching there is always a constant stream of Brighton characters passing by to keep you entertained. The owner is seemingly one of these fortunate people who never seem to have a bad day. If you wish he will entertain you with a constant supply of funny(if not corny at times) jokes. His pleasant attitude is one of the reasons I’m sure for the success of this very pleasant little bar. You will be able to eat and drink your full without breaking the bank. Well worth a visit once tried I’m sure that you will return again and again.

Banjo’s is one of the nicer sandwich shops in the Western Road area, although it is absolutely tiny! Meant more as a place to purchase a nice sandwich on the way to somewhere else, Banjo’s has still grabbed a pretty sweet location, right at the top of Norfolk Square, meaning there is a perfect seating area directly nearby. That being said, I find the location a bit out of the way for me, but it’s probably perfect for all of the commuters heading into town from Hove. The prices reflect that you aren’t paying for somewhere to sit, and are very reasonable for the amount of choice… In short, Banjo’s is a nice place for a sandwich, but offers little else. I’d hope for slightly more than that, but obviously that’s impossible with so small a shop, barely even a stand. For sandwiches, Banjo’s is a perfect fit, for everything else you’ll need to go elsewhere. Three stars may seem a little mean-spirited, but I like to sit with my food, and I like to drink a tea or coffee too, possibly even read a paper. Pure take-away holds little for me.

Whilst New York, Chicago and San Francisco have a wealth of food carts where you can get fast and filling hot snacks, Brighton has a wealth of sandwich and baguette counters. To my knowledge, one of the best is Banjo’s in Norfolk Square. An old fashioned brick building with simple signage, it’s open early morning to late afternoon with a steady queue of punters throughout lunchtime. Portions are generous and you can choose from a selection of hot and cold meat, cheese and veggie sandwiches, baguettes and melts. On spring and summer days, you can sit outside or in the nearby park and enjoy your lunch alfresco with the seagulls. In autumn and winter however, it’s a case of eating it somewhere else or suffering the rain!

Banjo’s is the kind of place that it’s difficult to write about without having to make several trips to the kitchen in search of some bread based snack. I first discovered it as a student as it served as a place where I could get a sizable lunch for a mere £2.50 leaving me with enough cash to go out of an evening in Brighton’s many grubby rock joints and student dives. It soon became my regular Friday treat to pop down on my short lunch break and peruse that fine establishment’s board of fare. The selection is great, from the builder’s style all day breakfast to the heady delights of the bacon, brie and cranberry toasted roll, well worth trying. The service is also excellent as the chap who owns the place, and sole employee(I doubt there would be room for another), seems to have a fine intuition of clients’ character and the facility to remember individual clients’ tastes. I suppose this is to be expected of a man who deals one to one with a vast cross section of the public day on day but it really does give the place a great personal feel. The café itself is little more than a brick shed with tables outside, but sandwiched between the bustle of Western Road and the relief of Norfolk Square its location is perfect for your day to day working lunch.

Care for a joke with your lunch? Well, let Mr. Banjo indulge you. For almost two years he consistently delivered perfect workmen’s gags to me whenever I made my weekly visit. If every shop owner were this friendly the world would be a better place. Anyway, jokes aside Banjos is a simple but great little sandwich place on corner of Norfolk Square. Serving an array of fillings along with various hot and cold drinks, crisps and fruits it’s the perfect place to grab a quick lunch. Whether you choose to sit on the tables outside or take your food away you’ll be more than satisfied as the portion sizes are very generous for the price. That there are so many sandwich places nearby and that it’s still open are testaments to Banjo’s quality and value. Without the funny man behind the counter it would be a great place. With him it’s even better.

This is a nice little sandwich shop sat right above the occasionally tranquil Norfolk Square. Although small to a rather claustophobic degree — fitting more than one person in this store at a time is basically impossible -, the sandwiches here are cheap and surprisingly tasty; Banjo’s has a five star food hygeine rating, and the service is quite simply fantastic. The owner is very friendly, and if you happen to order a toasty or melt, he’ll happily bring it out to you when it’s ready, whilst you wait in Banjo’s small, but peaceful seating area. As well as sandwiches they sell toasties and melts, all of which cost around £2, and you’ll also find soft drinks, crisps, coffee, tea, and a lovely seating area overlooking Western Road to consume your purchases in.
