Graham and Sue started off Badlands Guitars at Scream Studios, Brighton, back in 2002. In 2006 they moved to their current premises in Preston Road, Brighton. The shop(at number 48) was formerly a well-known Brighton Music shop called Impact Music which actually first opened a few doors up(at number 58) in 1983(and not many of us will remember that!) Earlier this year(2011) Graham and Suzy decided to give the shop a bit of a makeover. It looks fantastic! It really is the only truly-family-run Music shop in Brighton! Not only that but Graham and Sue are actually real Brightonians!(Not from Horsham!) Expect friendly, personal service from them together with a wealth of knowledge. I’m sure you will not be disappointed.

Badlands Guitars is the ideal shop for the armature or student rock musician. It has a great and unpretentious attitude to service and their prices are refreshingly reasonable for a music shop in a city with such a dominant music scene. The down side of this is that they don’t have much of the more professionally excepted, industry standard equipment. But then if that’s what you’re after there are a couple of great shops in the lanes that can sort you out with what you need for a slightly higher price. Badlands have a full and wide stock of equipment from usual guitars, bass’s leads and amps to the more unusual such as the odd Double Bass.

My first guitar was bought for me, in about 1988(I’m still useless), by my mum and dad from a shop called Impact Guitars. That shop is now called Badlands Guitars and is a far cry from the old days! Really good selection of new and old guitars and and a brilliant PA hire service. They also had some really nice Marshall amps in the window at pretty good prices. My eye caught a gold 1967 Epiphone which I was going to ask for a spin on but when I found out it had a price tag of £3500 I changed my mind. There is some cheaper guitars for sale in here too and its one of those places you feel welcome and are not hurried when browsing.

I would recommend this place for anyone who wants a bit more of a personal touch and a more old school, independent shop. This place is run by Graham and Suzy, who you will find manning the shop and giving out the advice that they’ve built up through over 30 years in and around the local music scene. I got my Washburn J-6 fixed here for around £40 and they’ve done a good job cleaning it up, rewiring some of the pick up electrics, raising the action and generally giving it a good seeing to. When I went to pick it up, Graham was really helpful, and took me through everything he’d done, and then we proceeded to have a long chat about the music scene in Brighton and about his shop. Nice Guy. Has a good list of Sheridan, Vintage, Stagg, Shine electrics and basses as well as Ukelele’s and second hand gems.

Badlands Guitars, although much smaller than The Guitar and Amp Centre in town, is very well stocked. They have good ranges of electric guitars, accoustic guitars, ukuleles, banjos, second-hand guitars and amps. Badlands is a much more middle range music shop– the prices are mid-range, more affordable instruments for beginners, families and anyone really who just can’t afford more than a few hundred pounds for a decent guitar! They have some really nice vintage guitars– if you prefer your instruments a little pre-loved. It’s all a little more low key in here but also a little less intimidating– the staff are very friendly and helpful and if you can’t find what you need they can order in something specific for you.
