Having been to the Ashoka, many times, my last visit was very disappointing. We used to love the Ashoka, despite it used to be one of our favourites, it has certainly gone down hill. The quality of the food has not changed, the food has always been fantastic. The prices are very expensive, far too expensive for my liking. The meal we had there came to £100, to me that’s a lot of money for 2 people. We went there the day before Valentine’s Day. We were asked if asked if we would like poppadoms & drinks, so we said yes please. We hadn’t long started, they asked for our order, well I couldn’t decide, so they gave me more time. But i felt rushed & obliged to make a decision quick. 2 minutes later, our starter arrived. Not long after, our main course arrived(while we were still eating our starter). I felt very uncomfortable & could not relax, which me feel even more rushed to eat my food. The meal was over in an hour. I felt like crying, as my husband paid the bill, as it was supposed a romantic & laid back meal. I am so disgusted at the way were treated, I will not be going back. I suggest to anyone, if you want a quick meal this is the place to go. For enjoyment, & a relaxing meal avoid like the plague.

I’ve probably had over 100 meals from this place over the years both eating and and taking out and they’ve all been great. I’ve always been treated very well in the restaurant and take outs have always been delivered promptly and correctly, sometimes with extras thrown in. I’ve yet to find a better Indian restaurant in Hove.

Nothing special to report here: Ashoka offers your most basic of Indian food, an oddity considering its reputation and façade. What looks like a big, jolly Indian restaurant turns out to be a larger version of one of the more tame restaurants around town, offering little of real distinction. A couple of special dishes, or something out of the ordinary, would be well appreciated. Ashoka looks, from the outside, like quite a swanky locale. It is pretty huge, extending across two old shop fronts, and the décor is elegant and refined. However, it only lets you down from there. Inside, the décor is less Indian and more generalised restaurant, and the food is sorely disappointing. For mid-range prices, the selection is poor, and everything seemed to taste rather bland. Instead of authentic Indian flavour, the whole experience felt watered down. The price is what really bugs me here. For somewhere that claims to be «authentic» and obviously aims at slightly more discerning market, the cooking is really not up to scratch, and neither is the décor. I assume running a restaurant of this magnitude must incur sizeable costs, but nothing apart from the space it covers is worthy of the price. Simply put, not good enough. If you like Indian, there are many better options in the area, in terms of food, general quality and atmosphere. Give Ashoka a miss; it doesn’t deliver anywhere near the local competition.

This ‘authentic’ Indian restaurant didn’t really much out of the ordinary. I came here and had a chicken biryani, despite being sold as a medium strength curry, it was unfortunately rather mild. As mentioned by Mike, from the outside, Ashoko looks quite well polished and sophisticated, but the inside fails to be that, while also failing to invoke the memories of a traditional Indian restaurant that has too often been replaced with these quasi-European ‘lounges’. The food was ok, it just left me feeling like I could have been better served elsewhere.

Having heard such good things about this place, I was fairly surprised by the barely above average quality to price ratio. Per head you’re probably looking at spending upwards of £15, which is fairly standard, but having entered with high expectations my evening was a little soured. I think you need to understand that despite it’s grand façade, Ashoka is in the mid-range market for Indian restaurants. For example, the food is by no means poor but due to the décor it feels more like a colonial Indian as opposed to a traditional Indian restaurant. I can’t help but think that Ashoka are selling themselves short by opting for this more restrained interior/atmosphere. Despite its aesthetic shortcomings I had no complaints about the meal. As a takeaway, Ashoka is perfectly good, as they offer free deliveries for every order over £15 and a 10% discount on orders over £12. As such, I’d be more happy to recommend Ashoka as a takeaway than as a restaurant but if you like your local Indian to have a more British feel, then you’ll probably enjoy it.
