Would like to say a big Thank You to Basit and his team for providing a first class service for our Marriage Event which was held on Sunday 21st February 2016. The food is always fantastic as always and look forward to holding our next event very soon!!!

Attended 8÷6÷15 Very busy for a Monday night; quite a lot of families. Splendid décor and seating. I knew about the no alcohol situation before going, so this wasn’t an issue. Given that the clientèle were predominantly Muslims, then it was obvious to respect this rule. In fact, I think that there we were(i.e. my wife and I) the only white customers. So, I think that that speaks for itself. I was with two Muslim friends, and my wife decided to join my usual quarterly meet. One friend had brought his young 8 yo son. We all had starters, and shared a piece each. I had the Desi Murgh Tikka which was lovely and spicy. I’d like to have tried the meat platter, as I wanted to try the«green» chicken. My wife had mughlai tikka. I won’t bore you with a breakdown of the costs, but the prices were pretty standard: £4-£5 starter, and £7-£8 for a main. The final bill came to £88, but this also included a meal for my friends young son(who decided not to eat) and a jug of mango lassie; so it went home in a doggy bag. As has been reported previously, quite a lot of people were leaving with similar bags. The keema naan was very different to that which I had elsewhere, and are made in-house; I can recommend these. I found the waiters a bit stiff, and not very engaging. Mains: I had — DESICHILLIHANDICHICKEN Wife had — PALAKMURGH This is where it fell down a bit. We are used to good size chunks of chicken, but these came in the form of very small bits, and not all breast; bits of thigh meat. I don’t mind thigh meat, but not to the taste of my wife. We both decided it’s not a place to which we would likely return. I suppose you get very used to your favourite restaurant, and it is difficult not to compare. Final comment — it was a very noisy environment.

I’ve driven past Tipu Sultan on almost a weekly basis for ages and even witnessed them bringing in some of the quite frankly ridiculous chandeliers before it opened so it’s been on my radar for a while. Nestled between Balsall Heath and Moseley on Alcester Road Tipu offers a ‘majestic dining experience’. Something I had to try, even just for a laugh. We descended upon them en mass for part of Vicky’s 30th celebrations and even though we were quite a large group(18 in the end) the staff did an excellent job, getting everything right even if we were being a bit loud in our celebrations. I shared a mixed platter with the birthday girl to start, each piece was tender and perfectly spiced with the green chicken really stealing the show(I can’t remember what it was called… sorry). Then for my main course I went for a lamb dish which was a perfectly spiced and stuffed full of tender chunks of lamb. We also shared a couple of naans, however my eyes were much bigger than my belly and I was eventually defeated. I hate seeing food go to waste but fortunately the great staff were on hand to package up some doggy bags for us. I’d say a good 60% of people I saw leaving the restaurant were carrying their leftovers with them! Fantastic food, great service and at a great price. I’ll definitely be back. Although be warned, if you’re used to knocking back a few beers with your curry then you’ll have to do it before or after if you’re eating here. They don’t have a licence to sell or for alcohol to be consumed on the premises. But that’s only a minor thing really as there are plenty of good drinking establishments in very close proximity.

For my 30th Birthday celebrations, I wanted to do a range of things… Starting off with cocktails at the Prince Of Wales and finishing with a film screening at the Mockingbird Theatre, I thought it would be nice to have a meal in the mix with some of my nearest and dearest at somewhere I had always wanted to visit, but hadn’t had a chance to yet. Tipu ended up being a brilliant choice! I had seen it being built several years previously and always wanted to give it a visit. With it’s ridiculous over the top decoration and it’s tagline of being a «Majestic dining experience», I knew it would be a fun night. My partner(Dan G) booked it all for 20 of us to go down on a Friday night and confirmed with the venue a few times due to changing numbers. They weren’t fazed at all by this and seemed to take in all the new info and make the requirement amendments to our booking. We got down there for 7:30 and the majority of the party had already made it along. Weirdly, there was space laid out for 18(rather than 20), but as we had a couple of last minute dropouts this was perfect. The menu is extensive, but not as pricey as you might think. We opted for a chef’s starter platter to share(£16) and was presented by a huge array of meat based dishes from their starter menu. For mains, I had the lamb shank(£10) which was cooked to perfection! The starters are priced from around £4(you have to pay for poppadoms, but only 65p) and the mains start at a very reasonable £6. The weirdest thing about this venue is that they have no license to sell alcohol, or for it to be consumed on the premises. Not a problem if you are having a chilled night out, but strange for the option not to be there. They do offer a range of milkshakes, lassi’s and other non-alcoholic drinks to choose from though; so you won’t feel hard done by. The food was fantastic and the bill for the whole table was £320(about £15 each). You could have a basic curry, rice and naan for two and come away with change from £20 if you wanted, but the food feels superior to this. They were even geared up for people to take leftovers home(as the portions were huge) and didn’t even blink an eyelid when we asked. I would definitely recommend a visit to the Sultan. Great food, reasonably priced and good service. I will be back.

Having read a real mixed bag of reviews for this place I admit I went in with trepidation, but having dined here I can testify that the food is sublime, definitely the nicest Pakistani food I have ever had, the only reason it’s a 4 * experience as opposed to 5* is, being Pakistani food, hence Muslim it has no alcohol license, but the mango lassi is authentic and defiantly not from a carton. The menu was extensive so I HAD to have a starter, I chose the cheese tikka, Deep fried cheese balls with salad, super tasty and not at all greasy, my main was sultani karahi murgh, which is a spiced lamb dish, meltingly tender lamb spiced and seasoned to perfection with lemon zest and lemon grass, bell peppers, coriander and a wealth of spices, hot but tasty hot not burny mouth hot. The décor is something else! Very very OTT, bling, beaten metal ceiling decoration, bling encrusted velvet sofas, super sized sofas and chaise longue, huge and plentiful chandeliers and huge mirrors, it’s OTT but it sort of suits the feel of the place. I will admit at first to feeling a little disappointed at missing my cobra beer with my Friday night curry, but the food more than made up for lack of booze and the clientele, in their wonderful colourful hijabs with their children with them, proved the no alcohol rule to be the right choice for this venue, because I’m sure it would not have had the same crowd in if they served beers too. So enjoy a mango lassi with your curry but please do visit, it really is wonderful food.

Well, thankfully I was warned that they don’t serve alcohol, or even let you bring your own, so I had a sneaky beer at home before heading out to this restaurant. I was part of a large group of people out for Vickys birthday and was had a nice corner of the building, although sadly we were sat on two tables. Most of the tables are in booths, which I think is really nice and feels more like a private dining experience. Infact you can’t go in without noticing how amazing the décor is! Chandeliers a-plenty and much wood carving-everything on a large and grand scale, which ofcourse adds to the whole dining experience. I thought the service was efficient for such a large party and infact I felt very welcome there. The ambiance was relaxed and happy so I’m guessing others felt the same. Food: many of the starters are really spicy despite not having a chilli sign next to them… unlike the mains which did, but were not hot at all hmmm… I had lamb kebab to start and then a chicken balti and naan. Not very exciting, but a good benchmark I find when trying out somewhere new. My bill came to £12. –amazing how cheap it ca be when you don’t drink!;) I had a lovely evening and I think everyone else did too-many people even took home the rest of their meals to finish off at home! I would give this place 4 stars if it served booze though!;)

Food is superb but portions are smaller than other restaurants which makes it slightly over priced. Restaurant décor and atmosphere is authentic and relaxed. Note no alcohol is served so only non-alcoholic drinks are available.

Beautiful décor. It really is majestic dining. The chandeliers are stunning and the lamp shades are very boudoir-like. I want my house to look like this. The bathroom had a dressing table that looked for for a princess and huge mirrors. The waiters are very polite and fast to attend. I went during my lunch hour. I ordered the dal makhani. I know that this is a buttery dish but I did ask for less butter. It arrived at my table completely drenched in butter. I ordered the romali roti which is really light and thin. I did mention the butteryness to the waiter. He kindly only charged me half of the dish price.

Hands down the best Indian food I have ever had! Tipu Sultan on the outside is extremely impressive, a large building at the top of a hill that stands out from the rest in both size and elegance. Inside the restaurant, it gives off a very upscale atmosphere and is as elegant as the outside. The staff is also very friendly and helpful – our waiter was extremely patient with our group(it was a bit confusing for him to keep track of what we wanted because we kept changing things, etc.). Although the place was busy, we were also served quite quickly. Food is DELICIOUS!!! Tipu Sultan serves the best Indian cuisine I’ve ever had. I didn’t find my favorite dish, Saag Paneer, on the menu so I asked if they could make it and they were happy to oblige. I enjoy spicy foods and this was made to perfection, spicy but not overly so. The rice and garlic naan was also perfect, definitely too much though – I was stuffed! To aid in digesting, I ordered a milky tea, which was also great. Too bad there was no room left for dessert because they had delicious looking cakes, brownies, ice creams, etc. I normally don’t enjoy Indian desserts too much but this one was great because I skipped those all together(making it maybe just a bit less authentic, but I don’t mind!) and had more western style desserts! A great sign of a ethnic restaurant is when the majority that dine there are from that same ethnicity, which shows that the quality of the food is excellent – this is exactly the case at Tipu Sultan. Most clients are from India/Pakistan, when I went, I was in the minority. One downside is that they do not serve alcohol, which is fine by me but good to know in case you’d like a beer or some other alcoholic drink. I only hope that my colleagues take me here again!

Okay this place was recommended to me by a very good family friend of ours. after few weeks of recommendation I visit to this place with my girlfriend to try it out. Was impressed by the décor and that is what the family friend was VERYVERYIMPRESSED by., but I am more interested to know how the food is. So here I go, very good parking space for a starters, very impressive entrace, good receptionist, will take you to the waiting area and ask your name to put down for waiting lists, amazingly assistant manager or LORD of the waiters will take you to your designated seatings, which are very impressive as I mentioned earlier the décor is good, but not very practice in my opinion. So here I was, ordered our first ever order at TIPUSULTAN, we ordered 4 different dishes, lamb biryani, sultani lamb, fish cury and pilau rice with popa dums and king prawns for starter. Popa doms with traditional sauces didn’t impress me as it is common in any indian subcontinental restaurant. The king prawns were really yummy like smooth buttery cream. After finishing our popa doms and king prawns, we waited for bit longer than usual for our main course, but when it arrived it we just wanted to get started and see how it tasted, I started with pilau rice and fish curry, which was not bad at all. then I tucked into lamb biryani and lamb curry, which tasted different but I wasnt feeling it different from any OTHER restaurant in birmingham. Anyway we ate half of the food and got half left over, so we decided to get it packed and take it home, WASTEISNOTGOOD. as we went home, i felt really bad in the stomach, and 30 minutes or so felt so bad that I threw up all the food, I don’t what it was, but my stomach couldn’t hold that food in… but I was okay the next morning, no diarrhea or anything like that… But yeah, in short, I wouldn’t recommend this place to anyone for second time. for the first time yeah good experience, but I am sure when you try it, that is IF you try it, you will see what I mean from this review. So good luck who ever wants to try this place, just because their DECOR is fancy, doesn’t mean they have AWESOME food… its just another asian food place I guess, nothing special
