This is one of those places that you should go to when you are already drunk. I went here for some early drinks with a few student friends before heading into town and I thought it would be a good idea as it is situated in Selly Oak amongst all of the student houses. It looks quite large from the outside and seems like a place that would cater for parties and such. However, upon entering, I was quite disappointed. It is a bit shabby inside and other than a few people, we were the only ones in there. Maybe it was because we went in there in the early evening. I felt a little unwelcome and uncomfortable in there and to be honest, we only stayed for one drink. If they jazzed the place up a bit I think it would be better and would probably get more customers.

TC’s is a pub up one of the side streets of Selly Oak that has the depressing smell of missed opportunity. Ok, there’s a lot of pool tables there, which is great if you want to play pool, but there’s not a great deal of seating if you don’t The décor is best described as bare and could do with a lick of paint as there is a distinctly grimy feel to the walls. The parking area also seems to be a missed opportunity as well, with the summer picnic tables nestling up next to the bins. I’m sure there are some people who genuinely like TC’s as it seems to have been around quite a while. However, I am sad to say I’m not one of them. A little bit of effort and a makeover would go a long way here guys.

TC’s in Selly Oak is an archetypal ‘working men’s club’. Set in a big room rather than a pub, the premises really lacks any sort of character, although the various examples of football memorabilia do something to liven the place up. Although I have, on occasion, walked past and seen it looking quite busy, the various times I’ve actually ventured inside me and my friends are often some of the only people in there, save for some older gentlemen sat at the bar. This is strange, given that TC’s is located in the very heart of the student area, closer to many than a lot of the popular pubs down on Bristol Road, and I put this peculiar phenomenon down to the depressing atmosphere and unwelcoming building — it just doesn’t shout ‘come on in’ like the The Soak and others on Bristol Road do. The only time I’d really recommend TC’s would be for if you’re planning on playing a lot of pool, in which case their frequently available tables will be a God send given how hard it can be to get a game on Bristol Road.

As a Birmingham uni student, me and my friends like a nice cheep pint. Tc’s gave us what we wanted, cheap beer, free pool and the football was on. The staff were friendly and even let us order pizza. We’ll deffinatly be back.
