Loved this curry. We’ve done take out a few times from this place and always loved what we ordered. Wide variety of selection on the menu to which is real fun. Our favorites were Chana Masala and mixed vegetables korma(think spicy!). The Naan is a bit pricey for only one piece with the order and rice did not come with the main dishes so we had to order that too(didn’t realize that the first time). All that said I’d eat there every night if I could afford it. It makes you ask the question why eat meat?!

Stupid restaurant was listed as open at noon but when I got here it’s closed on Mondays. How about listing it on Unilocal as closed on Mondays and not waste people’s time

EDIT: They now do a £5 all you can eat veg buffet. The choice isn’t massive but there’s rice, nan, 2 – 3 main options and fruit as a desert. Not bad quality wise, tho the main menu items are better, but great value. Certainly seemed busier than a usual week day lunch time so seems like a popular idea!

My best friend is a vegetarian. You’d think this would affect our friendship — given I’d have a side of steak with most things if it was ever an option… Last time she came to visit I wanted to impress with something really up her street so I booked us in at Deepalis, and it absolutely didn’t disappoint. The service was friendly, although a little slow(I think this was just bad timing with a big group in at the same time) and the food was really great! I genuinely didn’t miss meat at all– the flavours were delicious! I’d certainly recommend the Paneer Dosa, amongst other dishes. I will very much look forward to my next visit, and won’t even consider sneaking a tupperware of chicken into my handbag this time — I am a carnivore converted to Daal!

Deepalis is a relative newcomer to the JQ but it’s also very near to my flat so we have eaten there a number of times. Each time we have been slightly disappointed with some aspect of the experience. Last night it finally came together and it was excellent. The restaurant itself is really nice, modern, clean and comfortable. The staff are efficient and friendly. The first time we ate there the food was tasty but the portions were so big that I could barely stand up at the end of the meal. Yes, I know, I should have stopped eating. But I have a guilt problem created by years of being told to eat everything on my plate. Other times the service was poor, the presentation was dreadful, you get the picture. But every single time, one things remained to keep us hopeful, the taste and quality of the food was excellent. Now, they seem to have sorted out their portions and presentations, the service is excellent and the food, still great. For starters I can recommend the Gol Gappy, light crunchy Puris, soft potatoes and chick peas, the lovely sour tang of tamarind. Assemble and put a whole puri in your mouth. Taste explosion! For mains, Masala Dosa. again a great combination of tastes and texture. Give Deepalis a try, it’s a million miles away from the standard curry house serving a version of Indian food adapted for British taste. It’s beautifully authentic and wonderfully tasty.

After reading such glowing reviews for Deeplais, and living very locally, we were somewhat dissapointing with our experience. We booked a table for an early sitting and had the restaurant to ourselves for much of our meal. We began with a nice Papri Chaat starter washed down with a cold Cobra beer as we perused the menu. We were recommended the Chilli Paneer special, which we accompanied with the Daal Makhni, and a Mysore Dosa with a couple of sides. The Chilli Paneer arrived ten minutes before our other dishes and we were rather disappointed that this recommended dish was more Asian Indian fusion(terribly sweet and sour) and clearly didn’t go with the rest of our food. We decided to change our dish which the staff were happyish to accommodate(although one of the waiters did comment that the dish would have been better with oriental noodles… strange) to Mattar Paneer. The rest of our meal was average. Considering we had read glowing reviews of the quality of the food and options available and have eaten in many Indian Vegetarian restaurants ourselves, we were disappointed with our meal and sadly won’t be rushing back.

Deepali’s has been open for a few weeks now in the Jewellery Quarter area in Birmingham. I wasn’t aware that they already had a restaurant elsewhere in Birmingham, so I really had no expectations of what to expect. From what I can see, unless there was a door lurking somewhere else, the restaurant isn’t accessible, which is a shame. The menu is vast. I arrived late to the party, which definitely put me at a disadvantage! The menu has a wide range of starters, a few specials and sides, and then two sections for your mains which can be roughly split into curry and Dosa. In addition to the wide range of dishes, there are quite a few which do not appear to be your«standard» Indian. Again, this meant being late was a bad idea! I went for the Bhel Puri to start with; a puffed rice dish which I had been planning to try at some point. The portion was pretty big! If you weren’t quite hungry it could have done you for a main! Very satisfactory! I then went for one of my standard«tests»; Chilli Paneer. This was probably one of the best I have had. It was really different as it didn’t come with a sauce and was cooked with soy, but it was very enjoyable! For desert, it was a traditional carrot desert. It was tasty, but I had Pineapple cake envy! Overall, I really enjoyed the meal. If you’re after unadulterated opulence, there are other places in and around the Jewellery Quarter you can go. Deepalis’ however, offers good, alternative Indian food, good service, all at a very reasonable price. And they do takeaways. I will certainly be going back.

A nice surprise. This restaurant has just opened it’s doors to this second location but their new spot is off to a great start! I went along with some Unilocal friends to give the place a try and was quite pleased by what I received. The restaurant was originally described to me as a vegetarian only Indian spot, so to be fair(as a lover of steak and chicken masala) I did not expect much. My mistake… We started off with with — starters(shocking right?) and I thought I would go for something off the beaten path for an Indian place — chili fries! I expected a pool of spicy curry sauce pored over some average fries… low and behold a beautiful dish(check my pictures) came out with nicely cut chips(I say fries… sorry) garnished with tons of little chopped vegetables, herbs, and chilies. Yum! I then proceeded to my main course — a Doha(like an Indian tortilla) filled with a lovely blend of potatoes, herbs, spices, and other vegetables. What a delight! Plus the thing was enormous and shared a striking resemblance to a star destroyer… Which I say is a plus :) no but seriously this dish is not to be underestimated(the force is strong with that one). Dessert was a carrot pudding with vanilla ice cream. The carrot pudding was nice and light — which I welcomed after the large portions of my first two dishes. The ice cream was good but a little to hard for my liking. I will be going back to try more dishes soon — the fried okra looked very temping as did the various vegetable based curry dishes. What a great find!

The opening of a vegetarian curry house in the jewellery quarter made me quite excited. Even though I’m a definite omnivore myself I do love a good veggie curry. So, with a spring in my step and a hankering for saag paneer a group of us headed down to Deepalis on Monday night and we’re delivered a delectable feast. I ordered the vegetable manchurian to start followed by a much anticipated saag paneer. The starter of lentil dumplings with chaat masala and tamarind with delicious and the saag paneer that followed was divine. I also tried some of the crispy spiced okra which I will most definitely be ordering next time! The service was great, all the staff were incredibly friendly — the owner even came over and talked us through some of the newer additions to the menu that don’t appear at their other restaurant in Sparkhill. The restaurant itself is nicely minimal inside, and the main dining floor is raised from street level so you don’t feel like passers by are having a good old nose at your dinner! Deepalis is an incredibly welcome addition to the eateries in the JQ, and with it’s incredibly reasonable prices(mains start at £5) I can see it doing really well. In fact, I’m going to be back there on Saturday for a takeaway!

Having never really experienced Vegan/Vegetarian Indian food I was really interested in sampling the menu offered at the newly opened Depallis restaurant in the JQ. The décor fits in nicely with the local area and is nice and contemporary. On arrival we were warmly welcomed by the staff and the owner. As we were early, we settled in and studied the menu. What a selection! There was so much variety and I struggled to pick only one thing to have, I wanted it all! In the end, after changing my mind about twenty times, I had the Gol Gappey starter. I’ve never had this snack so didn’t know what to expect. When it came to put the filling in the pods, I messed it up, but after the first one I got the hang of it. It was a wonderfully simple dish that had a lot of flavour and it really opened my mind to vegetarian food. For my main, I had the Rajmaa as I love kidney beans and spicy sauce. It did not let me down. It was nicely presented and the rice that I got in addition was light and fluffy. For desert, I ordered the Chocolate Cake but as I had to leave, the staff kindly put it in a container for me to take away. I had it the next day and it was delicious. The staff were attentive and courteous and dealt well with our large table of 7 people. The prices are incredibly reasonable for the quality of the good. A good Indian restaurant is needed in the area and I was so happy to find out that they do takeaway as well. I’ll be back in the near future as I can’t stop thinking about what other dishes to try!

As part of our Unilocal Festival of Firsts, Manoj K. suggested we head to this little restaurant in the JQ. Having only opened in December, it’s building up a great reputation in the Quarter and definitely warranted a visit from some hungry Unilocalers to check it out. Firstly I should note that their pre-visit customer service was impeccable. Having contacted them to see if we could come along, we were offered a special set menu price and the owners were polite, friendly and inviting throughout the whole booking process. It was with a hungry belly and great expectations myself, Emma S. and Dan G. headed down to meet the lovely Unilocal crew. We arrived 30 minutes early(better to be early than late) and were immediately shown to our table to relax and have a glass of wine while we waited for the others to show. As per normal, the gang arrived on time and we were presented with the varied and interesting looking menu. The menu was split into starters, South Indian and North Indian mains and a short(but sweet) selection of desserts. Once the lengthy choosing process was completed, we sat back and enjoyed our glasses of wine(or non-alcoholic cocktails for those not drinking). We waited about 20 minutes for the first course to be served, but absolutely everything was cooked 100% fresh and to order. I had gone for the deep fried Okra, which was served in a very crisp light batter with a selection of 3 sauces(including ketchup!). The tamarind sauce proved to be so popular, Manoj asked for more to be bought up from the kitchen. Everyone seemed to enjoy their starters and commented that the portion sizes were very generous(perfect for our hungry stomachs). Once that was completed, the plates were cleared away and our next course was bought out in about another 25 minutes. I had gone for the Paneer Kofta(Indian cheese cooked into kebab style sausage served in a lovely piquant sauce). I am glad I didn’t opt for any sides, as by the end of this I was stuffed! We marveled at Cameron’s «Star Destroyer» of a dish and shared some of Jon’s delicious Chilli Paneer. Again, everyone was delighted with their choices and everything was fresh and very tasty. After we had(eventually) finished our mains, we had to take a short break. A mixture of great company, flowing conversation and plenty of food had taken it’s toll and we were all getting very tired at this point. Luckily, the wonderful wait staff were patient and never rushed us into making decisions. Emma had to dash off at this point, but took her dessert«to go»(which was a lovely gesture). When we had finally decided and ordered our desserts, we all wondered whether we could actually manage another course! Luckily, the pudding stomach held it’s own and when I was presented by my monstrously large pineapple cake; I was up to the challenge. The desserts were, again, delicious(and enjoyed at a not so leisurely pace). The whole meal was a total joy. The food was faultless, the staff were attentive and let us enjoy the meal at our own pace and the restaurant had a lovely chilled out vibe. I urge you to check out this little gem in the JQ now(before it gets too busy).
