Had dim sum for lunch on Chinese New Year. Restaurant was really busy but luckily we got there abit early so managed to get some seats before it all got packed with so many people. The place is nice, attentive timely service and food was great.

It’s capacious, it’s busy and plenty of Chinese punters — all good signs. Truth be told, though, I was disappointed. The appletiser drink I ordered was definitely not that, with its gross artificial sweeteners. And the prawn crackers had a funny aftertaste. Better was the deliciously slimy chung fun with char siu. Char siu buns also got a thumbs up, fresh and fluffy. More disappointing was the rest of the food: greasy noodles, the beancurd in Satay sauce I found inedible — too spicy and the sauce didn’t taste satay-like. Chinese greens were under seasoned. Sea bass was pretty good, tender in a tasty sauce. Service was affable and efficient considering we were a large party. On hindsight the dim sum would have been a far better choice, and probably their specialty. If I return, that’s what I’ll order.

Best egg fried rice and peaking style spare ribs in China town. The restaurant is a lot more down market and less exclusive as it use to be in the 90’s

First time there traveling from the U.S. Arrived shortly before closing and they went out of there way to recommend dishes. Everything was great food service and atmosphere, will definitely return.

The food is good, service was swift, although a bit too keen to get us out at 7.00pm, we was presented with the bill rather than given a chance to order coffee or drinks. Maybe they thought we was part of the theatre crowd that arrived at the same time? A fantastic selection of Chinese dumplings means it’s our favourite choice of restaurant when we eat in china town. Always busy but usually very good at getting people in and out(see above!) A larger than it first appears Chinese restaurant with extra seating upstairs. If you like your Chinese food then you could do worse than eat here. It’s unremarkable but nothing bad to say either.

I can’t believe I hadn’t got around to review CYC Restaurant yet! With the madness of reviewing FTR’s, it must have just slipped my mind… Well, let’s rectify that shall we. So, this is Chung Ying’s flagship venue, in the heart of the Chinese Quarter. It’s fairly easy to spot from the outside(with lots of embellishments you would expect from a traditional Chinese) and to get to the bar/restaurant you have to go up a small set of stairs from street level. We visited just before Chinese New Year, so as you can expect it was very busy. Tables of friends and family were seated around the place excitedly chatting and enjoying their veritable feast in front of them. Despite this, we were seated quickly and had already decided we were going for a set banquet menu(to make life easier). As Katy mentions, it was a real bonus that they were happy to bill us all separately for drinks instead of putting it on one bill. It made things a lot easier to calculate and ensured an easy and pleasant paying experience at the end! The food was marvellous. With everything from Yuk Sung to Chilli Beef and Prawns, were were totally spoiled with Chinese treats. Some things were more exciting than others, but each dish was tasty and well seasoned. Between the 10 of us, we pretty much managed to demolish the lot(and were all stuffed at the end). This venue isn’t the hippest venue in town, but it’s traditional, friendly and the food is delicious. I would recommend a trip to Chung Ying if you’re around this part of town and hankering for Chinese!

Visited here with the Unilocal crew for Chinese New Year. It’s in a beautiful big building by the Arcadian and the interior is very traditional. We had a set menu for £15 each including a starter platter and a variety of mains to share. The starters were your usual prawn toast, spring rolls etc and all were very good. We also had yuk sung– minced meat in lettuce leaves– which I adore and haven’t had for years! It was lovely to have it again. There were lots of mains to go round. I loved the crispy duck and chilli beef but wasn’t over whelmed by the prawns which was a shame as I love prawns. They were just lacking in flavour for me. Service was efficient throughout– it was great that we all paid individually for drinks with no hassle. This would be a perfect venue for a family meal or a birthday.

I’ve only ever been to Chung Ying Central which I’m really big fan of so I already had expectations about the restaurant. We were quick to be seated. I really appreciated that they seperately billed us for drinks before the meal. I wish more restaurants would suggest that as it was easy to do and as we had gone for a set menu it made settling the bill at the end really easy. The food was really good and they knew how to get the portions perfect. We felf like we were getting an amazing selection and a feast but not ridiculous amount of food. The stand out dish for me was the crispy shredded chilli beef. One of my favourite chineses dishes and Chung Ying really delivered. What can usually be a very greasy sometimes chewy Chung Ying make it really fresh and balanced. The sauce was fruity as well as sweet and the shreads of beef were quite large, different to what I’ve seen before.

I’ve visited Chung Ying Central on numerous occasions and have eaten at Chung Ying Garden as part of the Moon Walk they did last year. As part of that we did visit the original Chung Ying but only for a few nibbles, not really enough of an experience to warrant a review. Last night, however, on Chinese New Years Eve we descended upon Chung Ying for a Unilocal supper club. The place was buzzing, really full and a great atmosphere with people clearly enjoying their food. We had one of the set banquet menus so after ordering some drinks they brought out the first course of spring rolls, ribs, yuk sung, prawn toast and a couple of kinds of wonton. There was masses of it but between 10 of us we fairly rapidly demolished it. The ribs were fantastic, tender and juicy with perfect seasoning, the yuk sung provided a nice crispy contrast and the wontons were perfect. After a brief respite they brought out the mains — the table was almost groaning under the weight of the food. Luckily I had quite the appetite and the smells of the sizzling and steaming dishes being brought over were enough to make me start salivating again. The fish in black bean sauce was my highlight, succulent chunks of fish in a light sauce with just the right level of spice and peppery-ness. But everything was incredible, mountains of crispy beef, shredded duck, barbecued pork, king prawns, satay lamb and yeung chow fried rice — we all left absolutely stuffed, I don’t think anyone could have managed another bite — I was still full this morning! The only downside to the meal, as delicious as it was, was the sheer amount of salt. I generally have a fairly low sodium diet and felt so dehydrated this morning when I woke up. I understand that salt is a major ingredient in Cantonese cuisine(hell, one of the starters was salt and pepper ribs!) and would change it at all, just as a word of warning drink PLENTY of water!

An excellent restaurant to meet up with friends or that special someone and enjoy some good cantonese food. The restaurant was buzzing on the eve of the Chinese New Year. We sat around a round table with a rotating plate in the middle which was ideal for sharing food round and still being able to engage in conversation. The food was delicious. Crispy duck, Salt and Pepper spare ribs, Yuk Sung, pan fried king prawns and pork were some of the dishes i enjoyed from the starters and mains of the banquet. The drinks however are quite expensive. A pint of Tiger was £4.20. There is free wifi here and a fairly decent service. Most definitely a popular restaurant. I will recommend it to anyone and will be visiting again in the not too distant future.

I have been here several times over the years for friends Birthdays. We are always in a big group and they cater well here for large numbers. The restaurant is always really busy, but the atmosphere is vibrate and welcoming. This time however, despite Vicky using the online booking service, they don’t seem to have taken any notice and hadn’t got a table ready. Nevertheless we only had to wait ten minutes to be seated. Most people in our group go for the banquet set menus which vary from £20−36 each. However I have a small appetite so choose a starter and main with rice usually. Our orders were taken quickly(although they forgot my wine) and the starters brought quickly too. The rest of the dishes were brought sporadically, but nevertheless all the food was delicious. There is such a wide menu, they cater for everyone. I nearly always go for duck though as it’s my favourite. Despite the number of people in the restaurant, the waiters were fairly attentive and there was no problem with the bill. All in all were happy and would all go back again. Tip-it’s really hot in there so don’t put your vest on;)

Nice dim sum, resorted back to here after our usual closed. Menu available in English/Chinese, waiters will take your orders including for dim sum. All our choices were tasty and flavoursome, one exception was the ja leung(cheung fun with doughnut) which was a bit starchy. Good consistency to the juk(congee) and also had flavour too! A bit more pricey than our former haunt but nice atmosphere and surroundings.

Food is second to none within Birmingham. Place need a bit of a facelift and the drinks are average at best. Come for the food though i have never had a bad meal in 10+ visits!

Relativ gutes kantonesisches Restaurant. Dürfte eines der besten chinesischen Restaurants in Birmingham sein. Die Auswahl ist sehr gut und es schmeckt auch größtenteils wirklich sehr gut. Wenn man hier ist kann man eigentlich nix falsch machen.

The Chung Ying is an institution within Chinatown — this restaurant is usually packed with Chinese people, which is a good testament to its quality and authenticity. This is the case during week days, but it is often full during Sunday lunchtimes, where the traditional dim sum snacks are served. These small and tasty dishes include steamed buns, dumplings and rice noodles, and bite sized chicken, pork, prawn delicacies. Mmm, yummy. More substantial dishes are also served throughout the day. Staff are very friendly and attentive, and the atmosphere is always lively. It’s good value for money too. This place is a must for all Chinese food lovers.

If you like Cantonese food then you will love the Chung Ying Cantonese Restaurant. This restaurant is known all over the midlands and has been established for over 20 years now. I have known lots of people to eat hear and every time people have come back with raving reviewed. It is located beside the Hippodrome so it is very central and is ideal for a group of friend of even a date. I love the food here and I can’t state that enough, unfortunately the prices are a bit steep but it is worth it if you are treating yourself to a special occasion. The staffs really keen to make your visit special and there is a real authentic feel to the place. This is a must do if you have never been before

One of the best Cantonese restaurants in Birmingham! Prices reflect the quality of this place and it is truly superb. The food is delicious, and you have a huge variety to choose from on their extensive menu. The staff are always helpful and smiling, seating is great here, they even have seating opposite the bar for take away customers, which is nice when you are waiting for your take away — which is never more than a half an hour wait.

«This restaurant is superb. The food is excellent and it is reasonably priced. I went with a friend who used to live in Hong Kong and he and his parents agree that this is the best chinese restaurant in the UK. The dim sum is brilliant.

Very busy and popular family-run Cantonese restaurant, established in 1981. They also own the huge(380-seater) Chung Ying Garden around the corner. The dishes are very tasty and reasonably authentic, as attested to by the large numbers of local Chinese people eating here, although it’s not quite as good as some enthusiastic reviews I’d read before going there more recently(mind you, I’m comparing this with Cantonese food in Hong Kong and Guangzhou). As you’d expect, service is very good, and there’s a reasonable enough wine list. I’ve eaten here a few dozen times over the years, and it’s always been pretty reliable. A pleasant surprise is always the bill — about £20-£25 a head, including service.
